Anatomy Physiology Spring 2012

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am very excited about starting school this Spring Jan 11 to be exact. I have been out school for about a year now, and I am finally getting back on track. I am taking A&P 1 this semester and I am very nervous because, I went on rate my professor and looked up my professor and she has horrible reviews. She is the only professor they have teaching this class in the morning and that's the only time I can take this class. I have already started reading and taking my own notes, but I am still anxious. I just don't know what to expect. I saw that someone had started a thread for microbiology so, I thought I would start one for A&P so we could all vent  lol during the semester as well as keep up with one another about how everything is going. Good Luck to you all :):uhoh3:

I start my spring semester on January 17, but I have my first A&P I class on the 18th. I can't get my book until Financial Aid puts money into my bookstore account (which reminds me...I need to double-check when that'll happen), and it's killing me that I can't get started on the reading! They did email notes for the first three chapters yesterday with advice to start filling in what we could, so I'm getting started on that. Also in the email was the information that we need to re-evaluate our schedules outside of A&P to makes sure we have the time to dedicate the 3 hours/day of studying that most students engage in (and that's 7 days/week!) in order to be successful, and the warning that 40% of enrolled students usually drop the class. If their intention was to terrify me, it worked.

My instructor is the head of the department. She's got great ratemyprofessor.com reviews...they all say she's tough, but fair and caring. My lab instructor, however, isn't even listed there.

I'm glad you started this thread! It'll be great to have a place to vent and commiserate.

Edited to add: Just got off the phone with my school's bookstore -- the money's available today! Time to shower and head in to the school to get that A&PI package.

I'll give you guys a little hint with A&P. Keep your book. I can't tell you how many times in nursing school that I went back and looked something up in my A&P book. Especially when you start writing care plans and your instructor wants your rationels to be from the cellular level. I also used mine a lot when we did cardiac. It made so much more sense to me when I went back to A&P and started from the beginning. Also take A&P II right after I. I did I in the spring and then II over the summer to keep them close and I did a lot better than people who split them up or did micro inbetween. Good luck!

I'm starting AP1 in less than 2 weeks! A or bust is my motto. I ordered my book online but apparently the lab package is something school specific. Our school has a 10% discount day so I'm going to go buy my lab package that day.

Thanks for the advice! I had heard from somebody else that our book carries over between A&P I and II, but it's nice to hear it'll be useful beyond...especially because of the $$$ it costs! I see you did A&P II in the summer. The advisor I spoke to in the fall suggested that for me, as well, since I want to get all three sciences (A&P I & II and Microbiology) done in time to apply for the nursing program in January. How tough was summer mini-sem A&P II?

@camwill did you find Mastering to be helpful? When I used it in Chemistry I had five times to answer a question correctly. My A&P professor says you only get one time because it's open book. Ugghhhhhh!!

My professor did not require us to use it...it was a tool. I liked it and believe it along with some other things I had A in the class the whole course. It made me think! Plus I was able to have a copy of my textbook on my iPad instead of carrying my book every where. Just my opinion(^,^) good luck!

I started A&P I last semester. Only to find that the professor was really horrible at teaching. A few students dropped the class in the middle of the semester because they were having a difficult time with their grades, they asked the professor what they could do to better their grade . He did not help them with any ideas or suggestions, he sat and watched them fail... The students ended up dropping the class or getting a failing grade.. Needless to say these students need to take the class over again. And that is a unfortunate situation...My suggestion is if the teacher has bad reviews, and you can wait until a good teacher comes along, wait... A&P is hard enough without having to deal with a horrible teacher, and one that does not care about his or her students. If a professor is a horrible instructor, it makes it very difficult and a lot harder. If you can take a tutoring session on the side for the class that would help a lot, or a study group.Anything to help with your grade.

Any suggestions for a pre nursing student that is having a difficult time taking notes. I tend to take way to many notes.. And it frustrates me mostly in science classes. Also i feel I have to memorize everything . I drive myself nuts this is my first year in college,I am tryinh to get my pre reqs out of the way....I would love any suggestions...

@Pre nursing, ok you need to find out what kind of learner you are! Most colleges have a course that will find that out. I am all three. I have to see, read, and write. I read my chapters, write out from my memory what I remember, and then I watch YouTube videos on any confusing part I may have! This method works for me, I don't have to review for hours and the information is there. I also had a study group it keeps you honest and everyone is responsible to teach something we learned. I did not only make a A using this method, I made 99% or higher in all my classes. Best bet is to find out what type of learner you are and then experiment with what works for you and what doesn't. I use to write a ton of notes and couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. The class really helped me! Good luck this semester!
