Anatomy before Chemistry?

Published

Hi everyone! My first post here. I returned to school after a long break to pursue my degree in nursing. I am currently taking all the g.e.'s (easier for me :) ) and will be starting my science prerequisites next semester. I haven't found math to be that easy, and I know that Chemistry is a lot of math. I was thinking of taking Anatomy and Algebra together next semester to get a little more math practice before Chemistry. But my advisor said that I should take Chemistry first. I don't really know why? Is there Chemistry involved in Anatomy? I thought that Anatomy was all memorization?

Right. I know there's a chapter on Chemistry in physiology, but is not a prereq. in our school, however; I believe it should be. I understand physio. a lot better when I read the assigned chapter in chemistry first. Good luck!

I took both Anatomy and Physiology before taking Chemistry and I didn't have a problem.

I don't think you will have a problem at all. I am taking Gross Anatomy and Chemistry this semester, and I can't see why you'd need Chemistry before anatomy (this is assuming that Physiology is a separate class - I'm taking that next semester as chemistry is required before).

Good luck! I love anatomy, it has been very interesting.

There are great A&P classes online.

I dont understand why some schools separate anatomy and physiology...at my school they separate the whole course into AP1 and AP2 and it works out wonderfully because then you discover the form and function of the human body at the same time instead of learning all the parts then the functions another semester. that's really dumb IMHO. As for chemistry, you don't need it for AP. AP has cell resp and gas exchange but if you have a good book and teacher you don't need chemistry for that.

You have a good plan. There is no chemistry in Anatomy. Perhaps your advisor is confusing Anatomy with A&P.

The math in chemistry is not college algebra. It is fractions and conversions, adding, subtracting and dividing .... sometimes with funny names and/or set ups. It would be a waste of time to take Algebra for the purpose of the chemistry class but if you need Algebra anyway, it won't certainly won't hurt anything.

There is some chemistry in Anatomy and Physiology, but I didn't find it to be all that advanced or difficult. I placed out of chemistry at my college, having taken two college level chemistries while still in high school, and I thought that the chemistry covered in Anatomy was really basic. If you have a good instructor, they should be able to help you understand even if you haven't had chemistry before. I don't see any reason why you would have to take chemistry before anatomy, personally.

chemistry was not a pre req for anatomy

it is a pre req for micro and physio

you don't really use any chemistry for anatomy, if anything, just the basics

if you can't do simple algebra then chemistry will be hard for you.

I suggest to take a solid algebra course before you pursue chemistry...

Wow, I was on this thread when I was taking A&P 1 as a prenursing student and now I'm going into my second semester of Nursing School...

Time flies.

I took A&P without taking Chem (well, I took Chem in high school, 15 years before that they counted as acceptable!), it wasn't that bad. My instructor was great and the way she explained things just made sense. She understood that not all of us had taken Chem recently, so she taught it like none of us knew any of it. If other schools require Chem (or strongly encourage it), there might be a reason for it, perhaps your school glosses over that chapter?

I took it in the order of General Biology I, Microbiology/Chemistry, A&P I, A&P II. Either General Biology I or A&P I were considered prerequisites for Microbiology at my campus though. I don't remember having to do any chemical equations in A&P I and haven't had to do so either for A&P II. It was only basic concepts related to Chemistry that were contained in both A&P's.

Edit - I guess it would be best if I read the dates also haha. The form layout makes it pretty hard for me to take notice when exactly a topic will occur.
