Has anyone taking the lecture part of Anatomy & Physiology II Online? My favorite teacher was supposed to be teaching this over the summer but I recently learned he is going to be doing an online class instead. This really worries me as I dont know how well this material can be learned online. I think there is something about being in the classroom that can help you learn, especially with this material.
Has anyone taken this class online or considering it? What was your experience? What are your thoughts on learning this material over the internet instead of being in a traditional classroom?

BeesAngel,
Go to the Distance Learning Board on this website and you will find many posts about taking online classes including A&P.
Hope this helps.

I just finished A & P I online, and I loved it! My professor was wonderful. She was very willing to meet with us if we had any questions, and she answered all e-mails within an hour - even at night or on the weekends. I'm taking II with her in the fall.
I think the key is to be willing to ask for help when you need it. The only problem I had with the class is that I mispronounced some words since I was reading them rather than hearing them in class.
Good luck-

You're lucky. I've had profs that don't answer e-mails and are unavailable for a week at a time. That said, I still manage to get A's. Do I understand as much as I would being taught in the classroom? I seriously doubt it. But it's sooooo convenient. (I even do the labs online.)

Wow, I'm surprised they let you do labs online. I have taken several classes over the internet, but no science yet. As far as I know, A&P is on campus only. Online classes are definitely more convenient but I think I would learn more in certain courses if the instructor was in front of me. That's why I won't take a foreign language or math class online.

I guess it depends on how you're used to studying/learning. I took A&P 1/2 live, in person and can't imagine doing those lectures online. I mean, I suppose if you like reading textbooks and learning that way, maybe you'll like online, but I got SO much out of the give-take discussions that happened during our lectures! Instant clarification, drawings on the board as needed, overheads as needed....just hard to imagine. But I know people do it, you just have to know yourself best.
As for labs, I don't know how the heck you CAN do that online! Someone here just said they did, but how do you dissect a cat (and work with several other people's) on a computer?? Maybe the requirements are different in different places, but there's no way my college would do it. Too much "hands on" of the actual body parts, and the testing was done so that the pins might be placed on any classmates' cat(s), so you couldn't just get to know what YOUR cat looked like, but had to know how the muscles, arteries, etc might fall from body to body.
Yeesh, I'm glad that's done!

I can understand your concern when it comes to A&P 1 or 2. I had a traditional A&P 1, but my A&P 2 will not only be a 4week summer course, but the lectures are on video tapes.
I think if you go into lab, you will at least have someone to ask questions to..maybe before or after lab class. Utilize your tutors at your college, if needed.
Good luck! :)

I actually learn alot in the online lab by doing the activities. The lab cd is pretty much a joke and we don't use it much. Answering the questions he gives is where I have to look stuff up and think. The histology/model images are lame too. But my credit is worth the same as anyone else's, so I won't complain.
My lecture professor from A&P 1 (online) said that she won't teach an online lab class because she doesn't believe in them either.
So I don't get to disect a cat. So what? Now human cadavers would be different.
Well, all I can say is that originally I said "why do we have to do this?" too, until I found (along with the rest of the class!) that the layout of the muscles, organs, arteries, veins (everything covered in II) was darned near identical in a cat as in a human. So by pulling apart a cat you can see the relationship of the structures as they are in a human.
I'm sure not dissecting a cat won't be the end of your world . But it was definitely a helpful experience in learning the body they way the class intended.
We all asked about human cadavers, too, but were told that they were just too danged expensive so essentially just med students got them; it would be a very rare (and well funded!) nursing school that got one. Oh well!
Oh I definately believe that in-room classes are more informative. My A&P 1 lecture prof had on-campus midterm and final review classes. I walked out of both thinking "Wow, that's so much clearer with visual aids and a live person to answer questions." But the instructor gives the same midterm and final to both her online and on-campus students and grades them the same. I was able to get an A and still have my convenience. It can't hurt me that much to not be in the classroom.

I did A&P1 totally online, including lab. But I found that it was mostly memorization. Plus I had already done a cat dissection in another science course.
A&P2 was different. Yes, there was some anatomy, but mostly physiology. I could not have gotten through without the lectures. She basically followed the Powerpoint presentation we all printed out, but her way of stopping and describing things really helped me. I would not have done nearly as well if I'd done it online. We also dissected a fetal pig in lab at the end of the course. That was a lot more informative than when I'd done the cat, because I knew so much more, and could apply what I knew.

I just finished A&P I last weekend and am currently in A&P II, both on-line. When I took A&P I I was also taking Micro but that was in class. I found I learned probably as much if not more by doing the class on-line. My Micro instructor basically just read an outline to us, there were no worksheets or anything to further learn the information. In my on-line class the labs are basically part identification and part worksheet so you really have to dig into your books to find the answers. I learn a lot better this way. I worked at home doing transcription for 4 and a half years so I"m used to budgeting the time needed to get the work done (one of the hardest parts of taking an on-line course). I'd say go for it if you can, I have six kids, three of whom I drive to three different schools at different times of the day, and still managed to get a B in A&PI, while taking Micro at the same time.
