Anatomy & Physiology Fall 2008

Published

Several had mentioned starting a study thread early so we could get prepared for our fall A&P class, so here goes. I have gathered several websites from both here and on my own, so wanted to post them early on so that we wouldn't have to search for them. Please feel free to add to them and also any advice or study tactics that seem to work for you.

Thankyou to Eveyone here at AllNurses who have provided so much information in one spot.

Ok, that's it for tonight....I have several others but hopefully this will keep everyone busy for a day or 2 :chuckle:yeah:I'm sure we all have diferent study habits and will need to find our own way there but I am hoping we can work together as a study team.

Maybe each day or two, someone could provide a study tip or an mneumonics for memorization for tissues or nerves, anything that is helping you learn. Or if you come accross somethin that you can't use, maybe someone else can.

 OFF to Bed for me

So I decided to make my own flashcards for tissues. I found pictures of tissues in google images, stuck about 5 images to a word document, printed them on a color copier (at work) Glued them to an index card, and purchased laminating stuff at staples that cost 11.00 and can laminate about 30 cards. But now that I think about it, maybe I should have used contact paper? Anywho, I'm only through epithelium and when reviewing I know it for sure but then I wonder, is it all the same, for example will each picture of psuedo stratified epithelium look the same?

Anywho... I'm getting pretty nervous about class starting so soon!!:no:

From what I can see, the NCLEX will barely touch on A&P, from the topics covered:

Management of Care

( 13-19% of test )Reduction of Risk Potential

( 13-19% of test )Pharmacological & Parenteral Therapies

( 13-19% of test )Physiological Adaptation

( 11-17% of test )Safety & Infection Control

( 8 -14% of test )Basic Care & Confort

( 6 -12% of test )Psychosocial Integrity

( 6 -12% of test )Health Promotion & Maintenance

( 6 -12% of test )

So the main goal it seems to me is learn everything the Instructor wants, and not the whole universe. From the topics above, it seems like pre-nursing A&P I is more of a filtering class than anything. Yes it will help and it is a theoretical base to the medical industry, but don't try to overwhelm yourself on the level of pre-med students. Study 'smart', not 'hard': you might forget what you 'need' to know later.

The practicals or Anatomy quizes will be the laundry list portion, and the classes or physiology exams will be the important part to remember. BUT WOW, the first week there was over 300 laundry list items to know! Good thing Practicals are not cummulative, ha-ha!

I got the Martini book, cd, atlas, and suppemental photo-atlas. I don't know how much I will use 'all' of them, but they are there if needed. Unfortunately, OT at work has come to a screeching halt. So now that I realize this quarter is under control (after 1st two classes after Storm Fay shut us down), I can now try to get another job for a total of up to 60 hrs per week. Hopefully it will be something in field working with people, and with study breaks :yeah::yeah: But I'm only taking 7 semester hours, so everything is relative. I just need mo' money now :clown:

msdeannah, that's cool that we're using the same book! i am not quite sure why the book got such bad reviews! personally i love it! i think it explains things pretty well and gives you alot of examples that help you remember the information better! also there are little boxes that are called tips/tricks that gives you mnemonics and different things to help you recall the information better! also at the end of each concepts that you learn there are checkpoints where you can see if you know the information well. also there are these boxes called a&p top 100 that kind of break down the information and summarize core concepts that will be building blocks later on in the other chapters! the tests at the end of the chapter are good. also don't know if you saw the post or not but if you can find the study guide to the book by charles g. seiger it has been extremely helpful! it would be worth the money imo!

well hope this helps although we all know ppl's learning styles are different and this book may not be as useful to someone else as it is to me!

Msdeannah, too funny on the homemade flashcards....I just finished doing the same thing....I didn't laminate mine though.....just used a glue stick and glued them to the larger index cards....My Prof sent out the syllabus today and the powerpoints for Ch 1&4 which is where we will start.....I'm pretty good all the way thru tissues.....I start Tues and have classes Tues & Thurs for A&P....I feel confident so far...1st exam is in 3wks.....2wks after class starts. I'll get an access code to my book first day of class.

Specializes in NONE.

I'm taking A&P 1 and I feel like I'm about to go crazy. I am soooo stressed right now. I have got to get into a study group. Is there anyone from Georgia Highlands logged on right now?

My class went live today (doing it online). I'm excited, nervous, and happy all at the same time.

Well I only did the laminating thing, I was worried the pictures would come undone in my bag. Anywho.. I have to put my prestudying on hold to focus on my upcoming teas exam next week. I am not quite where Iwant to be yet so I have to change my focus so I don't have to retake it during A&P and chem:no:. Wish me luck!!!

Are you a student @ Georgia Highlands? If so, do you all have a study group?:cry::cry::cry::cry:

a while back my sister decided she wanted to become a forensic pathologist, so i went to waldenbooks and got her "atlas of human anatomy" by bernhard n. tillmann for an insanely low price, $7.99 or something like that. :yeah: it's pretty substantial, and i figured she might like it. well, i stuck it in my closet and promptly forgot about it. :banghead:

when i decided i wanted to go into nursing, i remembered that i had the book, and took it out. i started flipping through it and realized i had a gem! i went online to amazon.com and found that it had rated 5 stars on all reviews - looks like i hit the jackpot!

point of story: check out your local book stores on their bargain bins...you might just find something you may need one day

okay ya'll, here's another one: craigslist.org. remember it, save it in your bookmarks, stick a shortcut to it on your desktop. above all, use it! there's one for nearly every major city in the united states, and people use it! there's a search bar on the main page that you can type in say, "anatomy" and it will come up with a list of "anatomy"-related items for sale. i found a copy of essentials of human anatomy & physology by elaine marieb for $20 in raleigh, nc, just to name one.

believe me, i'll be using craigslist to look for my next textbook, that's for sure! and textbook.com, another great website!

My first day was yesterday. Unfortunately, I had to miss the lab to meet the landlord about the A/C (it went out this weekend). It didn't seem too bad, though.

The prof encouraged any of us in Micro to drop it, but I'm going to stick it out.

Had my first class today...not bad either...she wrote the Lab book as I have mentioned before...I like her though....seems very willing to help & anwser ALL questions.

We basically covered Intro to the Human Body...both text & then in Lab...plus the usual first day paperwork....syllabus,etc

A couple of us are going to do a study group once a wk or every other...we will know more after the first wk or 2.
