  1. I live right between Bethlehem and Taylorsville right now. I'm starting classes at the Taylorsville location on December 1. At least, that's the plan; I just found out I'm 6 1/2 weeks pregnant and my boyfriend wants me to move in with him in Georgia, so we'll see. I was really excited about starting classes, but now with a 3 year-old, a boyfriend in another state that I'm driving down to see every few weeks, and a little one on the way, I don't know that I'll be starting school right now. Ehh, the way life turns out is definitely not how we PLAN it to be!
  2. I get job listings in my email every day for nurses, so maybe it's just in certain areas that there is not a nursing shortage. I live in Hickory, NC, and while it's a very small town, there is definitely a nursing shortage here. Just the other day there were over 200 listings for nursing jobs in the Hickory area! It makes me wish I had gotten into nursing years ago (I'm just starting on my CNA in December). Good luck to everyone looking for jobs...hopefully the economy will start looking up soon!
  3. boone is a relatively small town, so don't base your judgment just on that one town. there are several larger (note that i do not say large) towns in the area, and some have great hospitals. i've been in hickory, nc, for almost two years. so far we've only gotten about three inches of snow...total. it didn't snow at all my first year here. and from what i've heard from "natives", there are no ice storms. but, don't count on it being a "cool mountain paradise" during the summer. it does get into the high 90s a few days in the summer. but it's usually not a very humid heat. anyway, i hope you decide to make the move to nc; it's a beautiful state!! kim (a transplant from atlanta, ga) :heartbeat sing like no one's listening :heartbeat dance like no one's watching :heartbeat :heartbeat love like you've never loved before :heartbeat
  4. I started class at my local community college today, and they gave us a 50-page handout. in the middle was a story that broke my heart. it's from time, on June 27, 1994, page 11. the column is called "my turn". http://www.topshot.com/dh/myworld.html
  5. I've downloaded most all of these videos and found them very helpful! Thanks so much for posting the link! I'm on the waiting list at my local cc to get my CNA 1 cert; I have not been able to find any training programs in my area. Hopefully these videos will help me get ready for whatever the program entails! If anyone has any advice, please pm me...I'm lost as far as what I need to do with prereqs. The people at cvcc have not been very helpful at all!
  6. I've read that wool has a tendency to conduct electricity...something we definitely don't want in an oxygen-rich environment around little ones! My mom taught me to crochet when I was 7...I've been making stuff ever since (lol - only 16 years of crocheting under my belt). Now that I've had a little boy and have all this extra baby yarn, I was looking for a way to get rid of it, and decided that preemie hats were a good way to use it, so I've been crocheting away. I've actually got a pretty good stockpile going (in less than a week!) and some girls at work are interested, so I'm toying with the idea of a charity... Actually, if anyone here is interested or knows a little bit about starting one...please help! Anyway, a few more questions for the nurses at NICU 1. How small do you need these hats? I've heard all sizes, down to the size to fit an egg...yikes!! 2. Is a 12x12 inch square too big for these "micro-preemies"? Someone told me it was too big, someone else said too small. One said 7x12 inch was enough.
  7. There are a lot of charities out there that donate knitted and crocheted caps, blankets, "angel outfits" and other things to hospitals for preemies and sick children. Are these items really used? How big a need is there for them?
  8. has anyone gone to catawba valley community college for either their cna 1 or associate degree in nursing? i'm thinking about enrolling in the spring, and was wondering how their program rated. or ? thanks!! :heartbeat sing like no one's listening :heartbeat dance like no one's watching :heartbeat love like you've never loved before :heartbeat
  9. okay ya'll, here's another one: craigslist.org. remember it, save it in your bookmarks, stick a shortcut to it on your desktop. above all, use it! there's one for nearly every major city in the united states, and people use it! there's a search bar on the main page that you can type in say, "anatomy" and it will come up with a list of "anatomy"-related items for sale. i found a copy of essentials of human anatomy & physology by elaine marieb for $20 in raleigh, nc, just to name one. believe me, i'll be using craigslist to look for my next textbook, that's for sure! and textbook.com, another great website! :heartbeatsing as if no one's listening :heartbeat dance as if no one's watching :heartbeat love as if you've never loved before :heartbeat
  10. a while back my sister decided she wanted to become a forensic pathologist, so i went to waldenbooks and got her "atlas of human anatomy" by bernhard n. tillmann for an insanely low price, $7.99 or something like that. it's pretty substantial, and i figured she might like it. well, i stuck it in my closet and promptly forgot about it. when i decided i wanted to go into nursing, i remembered that i had the book, and took it out. i started flipping through it and realized i had a gem! i went online to amazon.com and found that it had rated 5 stars on all reviews - looks like i hit the jackpot! point of story: check out your local book stores on their bargain bins...you might just find something you may need one day :heartbeat sing as if no one's listening :heartbeat dance as if no one's watching :heartbeat love as if you've never loved before :heartbeat
  11. Call me crazy, but I bought a laptop last January to *sigh* play a game I bought. Totally insane waste of money and time. BUT, when I finally decided I was going to grow up and get a big girl job and needed to get into college, I realized that my laptop did have one really great feature (besides the portability): a built-in webcam. Now, I'm not going to set it up so that it records my teacher's every move, but after I played with if for a little while I realized that it could record just audio. After playing a little more, I found that it could pick up voices up to about 25 feet away, so I'm thinking it will be perfect for taping lectures and such. That way if I need to review something, I can go back to that lesson-they'll be saved on my hard drive-or on cd to listen to in the car Just a thought if you've decided to get a laptop for school - or if you have one but can't justify lugging it back and forth to school.
  12. Hi UNC Nurse...I've heard horrible things about Frye. They apparently don't treat their employees very well. I've only been in Hickory for two years and have been told numerous times: "Don't go to Frye!"
  13. Hi all! I'm new here, just joined a few days ago. I live in the Hickory, NC area, which is north of Charlotte. I moved here at the end of 2006. Right now I'm just getting into nursing. I have to take a Pathways class (3 days) at CVCC and take the Pathways test, then I can be put on a waiting list for a CNA 1 class. Anyone else in the Hickory area? Or going to CVCC (Hickory or the Alexander County campus)? I'd really like to know how the classes are...and of course what books I'm going to need and all that. I have a three year-old son. He's the real reason I've decided to go into nursing. He's the most beautiful child, but I'm raising him alone, and up to now I've only been able to find menial low-paying jobs. Definately not enough to pay for childcare, so I've only been able to work part time. So, after signing up and completing a Medical Billing course, I found out from a doctor/customer of mine that nurses are generally taking over that field. There goes $900 of my hard-earned cash! I hmmphed and cried and blubbered for about 10 minutes, then decided I wasn't going to let this get me down. I started researching :typing different schools in the area (believe me, there aren't many) and decided that my best bet would be CVCC.
  14. I was just wondering, what part of NC are you moving to? I'm in the Hickory area (north of Charlotte), and am just getting into nursing.
