Am I the only one?!!

Ok, I know this is probably a "meany" post, but here it goes...

I am so irritated with the whimpy, whiney, "sickly" people. Why does it seem that NO ONE can suck it up and come on in to work? Come on... 4 days to get over a "cold" ? Really? What's even worse are the people that say "well, maybe they really are sick" and " you really should be more sensitive". WHATEVER! Yes, I understand if you have a fever and are truely sick. Please stay out. Do not contaminate the patients or the rest of us, but it seems it's the same one or two that are always "sick" with something. It seems that there is no work ethic any more. I was told recently when discussing this with a friend that we are of a different generation and that the newer generation sees working and calling out of work differently. Ok, I am not THAT old. I am still in my thirties, ok, latter thirties, not really the point. I don't get it. I have instilled in my kids the importance of dependability and responsibility.

Well, thanks for listening. I feel somewhat better. Now to work since I have more work to do sice 2 have called out today!!!

I agree and it's not just co-workers but Facebook posters, and even family members.

Never well. Never feel good. It's always SOMETHING with them.

I particularly can't stand those with sickly children. And they are always wanting to have us over and want us to hang at their house- no thanks!

What's even more irritating, I unfortunately for myself, I let it be known that I did not ever want to be a supervisor, so the powers that be that it would be a great thing to promote me a supervisory position!! Yea! (Glad for the confidence, not the position) I am a "tell it like it is" kind of person. It is really hard for me to be diplomatic and sugar-coat. Life is what it is and no amount of sugar will make crap taste better!! Anyway, I have a sickly person that I directly supervise and it makes my eyes cross when she calls out!! The last time she was out for 3 DAYS becuase her ear was clogged and she could not hear out of it!! HER EAR WAS CLOGGED!!! No Fever, no bleeding, no death, no nothing, BUT she had a doctor's note so she was covered. I have no ground to stand on with any complaints. This supervisor thing really sucks!!

In the Federal Healthcare system once an employee is past probation they can basically use sick leave as they choose as long as they have some....and many use it as fast as they accrue it; it's totally frustrating. Employees over 50 rarely call off, younger ones seem to always call off on mondays and fridays

I don't think your post is mean at all. I was working agency and walked into a shift one night. The nurses said Thank God you're here! (we have a comedy show called that here). Anyway, they told me the other agency nurse just decided not to show up! How bad is that?

If you're really ill - yes, stay away and don't contaminate everyone. But if you have a little cold, don't be a whimp or a whingy little baby. I get sick of listening to these whiners as well. There have been many days when I had to go to work, not feeling 100% but I survived - and I could not take sick days as I was the only one bringing in money, so I say to the whiners: try surviving on one wage, then see how many sick days you take then.

I have been on bothe sides, I usually go to work if I am sick if it is something minor that I will not spread to staff and patients. There are sometimes I just HAVE to call off. I will NOT feel guilty about calling off when I need to. I would not want my nurse sick if I was a patient. Now, with everything there's always someone to take advantage of this and call off for something minor. Nurses are human and do get sick from time to time.

These types of people are equally from all generations... I find that people who act like this had moms who act like this and/or babied the hell out of them every time they had the sniffles. People take this into adulthood. It's annoying. But honestly- those who allow it to continue are just as much to blame. Rather than reducing sick benefits for everyone (which will inevitably happen to curtail it) get rid of the offenders.

However, if people have sick time benefits and don't feel they can make it through a shift, shouldn't they be allowed to use their sick days?

I just called in sick because I partied on the weekends during nursing school. Duh.

I'm sick now. Was sent home from a day last week and called in a day this week. Tomorrow is day 12 of this crap. Deep productive cough - nice and thick (and green). Raw throat. Totally plugged nose. I'm supposed to be in tomorrow... and I'm going.. but don't want to. Just don't have the heart to call off again (though I work with babies - so I do need to be more careful about what I have) Dr says I'm fine, but I totally feel like $%^&
