Am I too old to just be starting?

Published

Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?

Thanks,

XOXO

i went back and forth on this issue. i have now completed my pre-reqs and start ns in fall 09. i will be 60 when i finish. i guess is age (old) is just a preception. welcome aboard:redpinkhe

Wow thank you all!!! I really feel better about it. If all goes well I will apply next Feb and begin the program in August of 2010 I'll be 28. Best of luck to you all in your careers as nurses! XOXO

You are never to old. The only time it is too late is after you are dead.

Nope ..you're definitely not too old. I know where you are coming from though because you sound exactly like I did up until recently. I bugged my family and my boyfriend and went back and forth wasting time for during all of the years that I went back and forth about leaving my old job and not making money for a while. I am 28, just finished my first semester and felt the same way. A lot of older people would laugh at me when I would make the comment and it wasn't until I had my son that I realized..yes, I have a long life to live.

Go for it!! You won't regret following your heart.

I am the same way. I really think my family is fed up with me deciding to do this and then that. The positive aspect is that I can honestly say I learned a lot while bouncing around trying to figure it out. Then you meet those people that seem to have it all figured out and get it all done right away blah blah blah!! LOL :chuckle

Are you kidding!??? I am 50! Actually I'll be 51 at the end of this month and 52 (OMG) by the time I graduate and take the NCLEX. I am realizing that my age is a huge BENEFIT so far in class. I have so much life experience to offer and excellent study habits. There is no age limit in fact I think the older, the better in some ways. Maturity is a great thing. There's a guy in our class who's older than me and his mother! went to nursing school at age 62 and she's 83 now and still practicing! So....NO you are not too old! Go for it!

I'm 41 and starting my second semester of NS - enjoy your youth, energy, and joy at this. Age is just a number. I feel better at 41 than I did at 26 anyway!

I am 36 will be 37, oh gosh, when I graduate in July. There are 2 people older than myself in my class. The class ahead of me has a man who is 51 and two women who are 48 and 46 as well.

You are only TOO OLD if you think you are.......

THINK 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do....:D

I think around 30 is the average age for my program. Most of the class is at least mid-20s with kids, and some are quite a bit older. I'll be 30 when I graduate.

So yeah, I think you'll be just fine :)

I will graduate from my ADN program a few months after I turn 45 and plan to continue on. Not too old! :)

Nope-I'm in my second semester of an ADN program, and I will be 31 in Feb, will be 32 when I graduate!! You only get to old if you keep on debating everything and never try to make your dreams come true!!! Best of luck to you!!
