Am I too old to just be starting?

Published

Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?

Thanks,

XOXO

i love the post about the 70+ y.o. guy who is in the nursing program~ how awesome! i love it! well, i'm 36 and i have to say that i have found so much inspiration on this message forum. it gives me great peace. i am beginning to work on my prereqs this coming week (school starts at my cc). i have a toddler of 2 yrs. and an infant of 5 months. oh yeah, my husband is gone for deployment to iraq until jan 2010. did i mention my border collie? anywayzzzzz......i thought i might be crazy for wanting to pursue this but after i saw how many other women out there were like me, i really felt more comfortable with the road ahead.

that's not to say it's going to just be a breeze, but knowing other women are making it work inspires me. at least i can get tips on how they attain success in their own pursuits in nursing, and at best, make new friends. it's nice to feel connected to others, albeit in a detached, bulletin/online forum-kind of way. so this site helps inspire me. i'm doing it. and you can see by the answers that so are a bunch of other gals.

old~ ha ha~ if you are in your 20's and think you have found a calling (life solutions before you're 30) then consider yourself blessed and thank your creator! all the best to you and all the rest of us doing exactly what you're doing (moving forward). cheers!

I am 24 and just graduated in May. I was almost 21 when I entered the program. I went to a community college for school. To My surprise I was one of 3 babies of the class! The 3 of us were 20 while some were almost 30 and most were at least in their mid 30s! Quite a few were at or almost 50! (They didn't look it!) I was shocked to find that for most of the students, this was a 2nd or 3rd career (sometimes more). Everyone got along great for the most-part and age for them wasn't really a big issue. At times I felt more out of place cuz I was one of the few babies and everyone knew it...It was great eing taken under their wing and learning with and from them.

You're never too old!!

Well, if no one has said it before, I will: How old will you be in three years even if you DON'T go to nursing school?

I was 38 when I graduated, and I wasn't even close to being the oldest in my class........we had two who were 47, and one of them went on to her BSN afterwards. That nurse is now 60 and works at the same nursing home I do, running the floors just as hard as any of the younger ones, and she does a great job.

'Nuff said.

I am just about to start nursing school next week and I'm 29 years old. I will be 31 when I become an RN. My daughter will be 9 when I'm done. I thought too I was too old and that my daughter getting older meant I would miss out on things.

But, the reason I started so late is because I stayed home to raise her, took pre-reqs when she was in preschool, and most importantly was there for her for the first years of her life which are the most important for children to have their parents there.

Now that she's in school longer I can go back and finish my degree.

It doesn't matter what age you are when you start and when you end because all that matters is that this is what you really want and you are going to work for it.

Some start late for reasons and some get to go straight to school. As long as you are happy and confident with your decision then age doesn't matter.

When I told this to myself I felt better about starting school at my age because this was something I was doing for us. And, knowing I was there for her to establish a wonderful relationship with her I knew waiting was well worth it!

I think we all get nervous because although it is an AA degree to some, there is

pre reqs that are about one year, and a wait list and then the actual program.

But everything great takes patience and hard work right?!

I am 44 years old and will be graduating May 8th. You are not too old.:)

I am currently in my 3rd semester and will be 52 when I graduate. You're never to old and you have to live your dream!

Are you serious????

I started nursing school at 33 and will be 35 when I graduate from a BSN program on May 16th. I spent 14 years in the corporate world before I took the plunge into nursing. The oldest in my class is 52 years old, and she is/was a housewife.

No, you are NOT too old! LOL!

I just passsed NCLEX RN and I'm 57 and plan on going forward to get my BSN . You are never to old.

Too OLD??? NEVER!! I got my LPN at 29, my AD at 35, and now after many years of nursing, I am working on my BS online at the young age of 54!! And there are only a few nurses in my online classes who are younger than 30.............keep going and good luck!

Too old? You're still a baby! Go for it, girl!

I was 30 years old when I started my pre-requisites. I am now 49, have attained my BSN and Masters and work as a Director of Nursing in a hospital. We are never too old for anything we put our mind to. We are only as old as we feel (sometimes that is ancient). LOL:yeah:
