Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?
Thanks,
XOXO
I am 31 and worked in banking and retail before having my three children and staying home for a while. I am only in my first year of an ADN program but I don't feel like I am too old. I take the evening classes because of my kids and at least half of the class is older than me.
I don't think 30 is too old, I almost wish that I had started back sooner so that I would have finished by 30, it just wasn't in the cards for me. If you feel that it is your calling, you should go for it. Good luck!
I had to reply to this one! traveling to my final exam for my first semester of nursing school at a community college, my daughter was delivering my first grandchild! I'm 52 years old now, she's had a second baby and I'm still not done. Thanks to Excelsior I was able to transfer and take time out to help her as she was bedridden for a long time. Hopefully I will finish before I qualify for senior citizen discounts! The older you are, the more "life experience" you have
As long as the age for retirement doesn't drop to 35 you are just fine. I am 48 and in my 4th quarter of a 7 quarter program in nursing. I will graduate just before my 49th birthday. I can still walk, hear, see, and think ... all prequisites for a good nurse (not to mention having a caring heart). So how old is too old? I don't think you're ever too old to learn new skills, especially ones that will help you help someone else. When you're young time seems interminable ... but the older you get, the faster it seems to pass. So don't worry about the delay in your career. Now is the time! Go forth and pursue it!
Roxy, you're never too old! I turned 60 in August and just passed my boards for RN. Graduated from LPN 40 years ago but haven't worked as an LPN for the last 30! Go for it, I took one class at a time and it took me 8 years with all my pre-reqs. Good Luck.
Good for you !!!!! You know we can get "discounted" senior coffee at McDonalds on the way to work !!!!
think it's .15

this is for real.....a met a woman at work several years ago and we have become great friends.....She told me that she was 70 !!!!!!!!! I was shocked...she works any young nurse under the table, is energetic, vibrant and one of the best nurses I have ever worked with...She went to school and got her license in her early 50's so she has worked full time since then...
YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO BEGIN NURSING !!!!!!!!! I guess working hard keeps you young, she looks about 55.......
