Am I too old to just be starting?

Published

Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?

Thanks,

XOXO

This thread has inspired me to move out of state to pursue nursing school and get my BSN. I am 23, I don't know how old I will be when I graduate

You are definitely not too old!!! I started the Nursing Program at 50! I'm over 1/2 through the first year. Most of the other students are AT LEAST 25. Don't use age as an excuse and get your butt into the program! :yeah:

HELLO I started at 42 years old and graduated last year as an LPN I am now going for my RN and work full time and have a husband who is half paralyzed,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I wish I had started at your very young age. Stop thinking about it........ Nurses are born not made, if you think it do it......................Your just procrastinating. When I was in school my big line before each test was let's BANG IT OUT. Classmates would say you ready I'd say Bang it out........ You take my words and do it.......good Luckgood.pnggavel.pnggavel.pnggavel.pnggood.png

Tell your family you made up your mind to Just Bang It Out

You are so young still. Wish I had thought about going back to school at your age.:D

I'm 42, and finished with all my prereqs. I've been on a waitlist for 2 years (ADN program).

While waiting I finished additional classes and have now applied to a BSN program.

Will be in an RN program this fall, and i'll be 43.

Like an earlier post said, just tell your family you've made a decision and GO FOR IT>

You'll feel a tremendous relief! It wont be easy, but you'll be proud of yourself for taking the first step.

Good luck to you!

I have been enrolled in different nursing schools (three, to be exact) at different times in my life, and in different countries. Each time I left due to, "allowing life to get in the way." (It happens!) Academically and clinically, I was doing very well.

It broke my heart. :banghead: (enough said!)

I am now enrolled in an LVN programme and will graduate in August. I have also consistently been on the "High Academic Honours list." From there, I will pursue my BSN.

BTW, I will be fifty-two years old when I graduate in August. (but don't tell anyone, LOL!)

You CAN do it, if you want it enough.:yeah:

This forum has been sooo beneficial to me. I will use Suzanne's plan for the Nclex, and I bow to the expertise, experience, and plain old common sense, that is Daytonite.

Again, you CAN do it - go for it!!!!!!!!!!!! :redbeathe

is 28 old to be just graduating from nursing school?

is 28 old to be just graduating from nursing school?

Absolutely not. I'm in a BSN program and will graduate just shy of 26. I'll have many working years ahead of me!

No way! The majority of students in my class were older. Some in their 40's, the majority in their 30's. You are never to old to learn!

Specializes in MICU/SICU.

I'm 34 and am only in my first semester of a 2 year ADN program.

I'm gonna have to start whoopin' some tails of you young'uns wonderin' if you're too old to start. you're making me feel older! :D:chuckle

all teasing aside though, i really thought i'd be the oldest in my class but i'm not. i'm right in the middle, really. the girl that takes turns driving to school with me is 18 and there's a 20 year old guy in my study group, but there're several my age and 5 or 6 older than me. it seems to me that ADN programs have more of an appeal to the older, non-traditional student because the sooner we get it over with the better, right? most of us have children and need to get the degree asap so we can start working. i, for one, do want to go on to a BSN and maybe beyond, but as for now i'm just looking forward to that R and N behind my name, right guys?!

besides, i'm really young at heart so it's all good :p

Dont be silly!!! Im one of the youngest in my cohort and the youngest in my class by a long way, most of them are mid-forties and weve only just started. Apparently they will be better nurses than me because they have "life experience" so u will get more respect at your age!! Anyway you should go 4 it!! Good luck!! :)

As mentioned in an earlier post, what age will you be a couple years from now if you don't go to nursing school. Everyone goes to nursing school on the same level....learning all there is to know about nursing, where others may have an edge is with life experiences. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!! It is a great profession and the pride you feel with helping others far out weigh all of the other issues that may come along.
