Am I too old to just be starting?

Published

Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?

Thanks,

XOXO

No such thing as too old! I'm 27 now and in the middle of my first year of Nursing School. I am glad I made the decision to go back when I did and never wish for a second I would have tried sooner. It just worked out when it did. I have a lot more maturity and world-experience than some of the girls who are much younger than me. Go for it! :) There are many girls (and one guy) around my age in my classes, and a handful of ladies who are quite a bit (10 to 20 years) older than me as well. The minority are the youngin's in my class! Maybe four of them are under 21. Anyway, the majority are right around my age but it's all over the board.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! My cousin is 50 and less than five years ago she got her nursing degree and is not employed full-time in NICU somewhere in Northern Virginia (Fairfax??). This was her dream always and she did it! I'm 49 and am starting a job as a nursing assistant at an area hospital and am considering furthering my education and becoming a nurse. It is NEVER too late! Go for it!

Graduate in June and will be 54!! I figure that I have another good 70 years to go!! :D

Truly NEVER too old.

Pros: a million, including life experience

Cons: none

Live long and prosper.:up::up:

I started my pre-reqs at 55 (only had 1 psych course that transferred). I graduated with an ASN at 58. I am currently contemplating a BSN. Never ever too late. Good luck.

I will be 49 tomorrow and will be graduating with my ADN on May 14th of this year. It's NEVER too late to begin pursuing your dream! I look at it this way...I can either be 49 with or without a degree, but I would rather spend the next 30 years doing something I'm passionate about!

Best of luck,

Toni

30?? Too Old?? I went back to an Accelerated BSN-RN program at the age of 48, and relocated to another part of the country to do so. I laugh at those who say at 30.. is it too late?

Its not your age thats going to hold you back, but your true desire to do this.

I finished nursing school last yr. took my state boards last summer and have been working ever since.......I'm 61 and I'd do it again. Hang in there girl it's well worth the hard work that nursing school demands of you.

You are certifiable, right? j/k :clown:

I had a gentleman in my class [we graduated last May] and he had just turned 67 before we graduated. :coollook:

He said nursing is going to be his "end of life" career. :saint:

And BTW, 30 is NOT old!!! :wink2:

By no means are you too old!!!! I have students that are starting their program in their 50's and some that will graduate in their late 50's early 60's. GO FOR IT!!:yeah:

you need to search this forum

there was a big thread on here last month where the same question was asked by someone 45

there were many replies from the over 40 crowd who started nursing in their 40s or even 50s
