Am I too old to just be starting?

Published

Alright, I am very new to this so please bare with me. I have gone back and forth for years now about going into nursing. Finally, after driving my family and boyfriend crazy about what I want to do with my life, I decided to finish my pre-reqs for the program this year and apply next fall. I have worked in the corporate world, real estate, a restaurant early on, and have always felt very unfulfilled with my jobs. I have always been drawn to nursing because I am a true mush ball and love helping, caring, :heartbeat being sensitive, and working hard. I am 26 now and will be 27 in June. After doing a lot of research about acceptance into programs, experiences, etc, I realize it is something I REALLY would love to get into. My question to anyone is do you think I am too old to JUST be starting pre-reqs? Seriously, I can't apply until Feb 15th, 2010 only to begin the program the next session. I'll be 30 by the time I'm done . And that is assuming I am not put on an insanely long waiting list. Anyone else starting at my age or older? If so how did it go? Pros/Cons?

Thanks,

XOXO

No Mahage , I live in Victoria, Australia. A Div.2 or Division 2 nurse is one step away from Registered Nurse although RN's do more intensive training. By the time I finish I will be qualified to do a lot more than I do at the moment working as a PCA.

I think 30 is a great time to start NS. If I would have had a passion at 30 to pursue a nursing career, I would have many years of working in the nursing field and maybe would had gone further and studied for a Masters, or Doctrine. I think a bit of "maturity" (although, you are still young) helps when going to school. There can be alot of different "personalities" going through the program, from fellow students, to instructors and faculty, patients, and with others you'll encounter when doing clinical rotation. It is well worth it if nursing a calling. I will graduate in December at 55 years of age---10 years from retirement--and the knowledge that I will be practicing nursing soon keeps me going somedays when I feel as if I'm "just too old." Go For It!:p

ABSOLUTLEY NOT!

i just started an accelerated program this month.......i am 37. there are two ladies in my class who are over 50 and another one who is almost 50. yes, we are the oldest in the group but so what. we are a student just like anyone else, only we bring a little more experience and life knowledge to the dynamic of our class. there is no reason you should feel too old. as a matter of fact most of the students are in their late 20's anyway, so being 30 you will probably be right in the mix. our class has single, married, with children, without children, and different races and cultures are represented. my only advice is try to take pre-req's before you start if possible - it will make the intensity of an accelerated program a little (only a little) easier.

good luck!!!!

You are never too old to do something you want to do. I started NS at age 48, finished at 50. Had a friend started with me, she was 56 when she finished. We are both working now and loving every minute of it. I'm on a Surgical Floor and she works in ICU. There are lots of advantages to being a "older" student. The majority of my graduating class was non-traditional students, meaning over 25 and with families, jobs, responsibilities. We bonded and got each other through the rough times. I also think we studied harder and were more serious than our college-age partying classmates. (No offense intended)

Please...you are still a baby! If only I could have started when I was your age. I'm happy that you found what you would like to do. A lot of people don't figure that out til much later...like me. I'm in my 4th semester of Nursing School and I'm 55 yo. I love the kids that are with me and I've never felt old because they have never treated me that way. Actually, you will be surprised at who is in Nursing School. Just a few are in their early 20's but the mean of class is probably 25-29 yo laced with 30's and 40's. It has been a wonderful experience for me. Good luck and enjoy the process!

i started a lpn program at age 42. i have been working as a nurse for 12 years now. best career decision i've made. no regrets here.

Nicely done !! Did you get your BSN? I am planning on transfering to a 4 year. I am now remembering how tough the sciences are. I just need to stay positive and push through. I am only able to go part time for my pre-reqs because I also work full-time, have a child, a fiance and a household to run :saint:. It is difficult to find study time. Keep me posted on how your first job goes. I'd love to hear all about it.

Take care

Your never too old to live out a dream. With that said, I started my pre-reqs at 38 and will graduate this May at 43. Although I wish I would have done this 20 years ago, I would not have changed one thing about the journey to and through nursing school. I say go for it!!!!!

Oh, please! Are you serious? I would give anything to be starting out at 30 instead of 60.
