Alright, after several months of posting here in relative peace, I am now about to have people angry with me. I can feel it coming on....
Is it just me, or are all of these "help me!!" threads really getting on people's nerves? We have so many expert, helpful people here, and I think it's wonderful that everyone is so open and willing to share. And I do think it's appropriate to answer questions as to whether or not someone should enter the nursing field.
But all of these threads where people want them to do their work for them are just really irking me lately!! When the poster wants someone to do the leg work for them, AND THEN POSTS IT IN 8 DIFFERENT FORUMS, is a bit much in my book. And don't give me this "I don't have a creative bone in my body" crap. If you're going to be a nurse, you'd better find out how to be creative, or care delivery is going to be rough. "Please give me an idea for a presentation!" "Please tell me some nursing diagnoses for my care plan." "How do you do a cardiac assessment?" (That one really got me.)
The internet is a fabulous tool (that wasn't in use much when I graduated, and no, this rant is not just because I'm bitter), and this bulletin board is a fantastic forum for sharing. But give me a break. It's great to bounce ideas off one another, but trying to get someone to just do your work for you is taking it a bit too far.
Ok, clearly I need help. This is a Dayray-length post!! Thanks for letting me vent, and I'm ready for whatever wrath may come my way.
I wax and wane on this. Somedays I am feeling really teacherish, and other days I am saying to myself, Oh for crying out loud, open your book like I did. But I don't answer on those days.

I really don't have a problem with giving a student a "nudge" when they are stuck. In my student days, I remember being so frustrated and tired at times that I couldn't see the answers in front of me. Sometimes just having someone restate my question to me in a different way, or showing me a different view or path to the answer was all I needed to get me "unstuck" .
The toughest part of begining nursing is trying to find information on a specific topic when EVERYTHING is new. I would look up one topic, then have to refer to more books just to understand the language in the first book. Before I knew it, I would loose track of what I originally set out to discover.
I try not to give any schoolwork advice seeker the direct answer. I think you learn better when you find the answer yourself, even if someone else had to point you in the right direction.
BUT!!!! I think most of these student assignment questions belong in the student nursing forum. Get help from those who are working with the current texts and trends.
I agree with hoolahan about posting the same question in multiple forums....What's the point of that?

I guess where I differ is where I can tell the person asking the question has exhausted a reasonable amount of resources before asking us. But there was one that asked something about a drug, and within 3 minutes I'd found the answer in my drug book and at an online pharmacology site...... well, that just tells me that person didn't even try.
And yes, I get tired of people with only 1-5 posts asking if we feel something was done wrong in their aunts/brothers/neighbors/babysitters/grandmas health care delivery. Thank you Nurse Ratched, I'll be using the "ask-a-nurse" line from now on, if you don't mind?

Agreed. I truly don't mind when someone comes here for clarification, because they've gotten confused by conflicting or confusing info they've found; or to check their perception or understanding of the assignment, or to bounce ideas off people. It's when someone comes and lays the problem down and sits back waiting for answers--making it clear that they themselves have made NO attempt whatsoever to research or begin solving the problem, that I get irritated. And for the record, I'm NOT talking just about students or the dial-a-nurse folks.
Yes, there will be some that say I'm easily irritated. However, as a STUDENT, no... as a working 40 hours/week student it bothers me that people can't do their own fargin' work. I see it at school all the time, the same people that consistently slide through, don't know what they're talking about, ask me what my response to question #12 was, whatever...
I always tell them I'm not a free tutorial service.
I have the same attitude here. If someone is truly, honestly stuck and needs help, fine, I'll help or be supportive if I can. If they are just lazy or unmotivated, no. Forget about it. Do it yourself.
feel about the same as some of you posted before, especially after being in the classroom all day, and have to answer questions about things I talked about months before and (always the same) some students never heard it before.

It's not just you. I have gotten sick of all the students asking for homework help. Where are their instructors? I personally will NOT do students' homework assignments for them...I would never ask anyone to do mine for me. They have the internet. When I went thru RN school (grad 1997), we had our lousy-arzz library with a few crappy texts for nursing, only. WE had to research mountains of microfiche and old journals to find what we needed. The internet was not brought fully online at college til the year after I graduated (naturally). Students today have access to tools and advantages many of the rest of us who graduated before only dreamt of. (when we slept that is). It IS getting ridiculous.
But I also agree, we have the choice NOT to partake in such threads. All I do when I see them is point them to a helpful site and wish them luck. If it's a vent, I offer support cause I have been on the asking end once or twice myself. We ARE great support for each other, after all. But those who do so continously--- do put a drain on me emotionally, so I just abstain. I think those who help themselves after being pointed the right way or offered a kind shoulder and ear are the ones I respect the MOST. The rest, I ignore, in the interest of keeping peace.

But really, if someone wants advice on something they're working on-great, but the one's that say-I need a topic, an idea for a project bla, bla, bla...bring something to the table-show that you've actually tried to come up with something *sigh* That's something we learned in high school-original thought-
I don't think it's just you. I get tired of it too, but not always. I certainly don't mind -- and actually enjoy -- when nurses or students bing questions here about a specific patient or circumstance (i.e. hypotensive patient, doc wanted to put them on Nipride ... Why? Would it work, etc.), or if they have a question about nursing practice. I don't mind established members asking medical questions about themselves or loved ones (although, I probably shouldn't talk, being quite new here myself). The student study questions do bother me most of the time, but I choose not to answer them. If I'm in a good mood and feel like teaching, or want to stroke my ego, then I answer. I am very leery of Junior Members showing up and asking detailed medical questions about a disease process or a procedure, or "how you would have done it." But again, being new here myself, I don't want to rush to jugement.
Personally, I think the students with questions should go to the Student Forum. When I was in school I was in a study group and we would bounce things off of each other all the time. If you want help studying, start an Allnurses study group! Then you can ask all of the drug, physiology, and project questions you want.
While we're here ... can I just b**ch about all of the "Men in Nursing" posts? Those are the ones I'm tired of.
