Alvin Community College ADN Spring 2015

Published

Starting a thread for people applying for Spring 2015 at Alvin Community College. Also wondering if anyone knows what counts as proof for Hepatitis B immunity?

Is pharm the same as dosage calculations?
Not even close. Pharm is learning the multiple drug classes/uses, drug composition, interactions, and the administration of drugs. Dosage calculations is just the math of administering medication.

Yeah see at my school pharm is a 3 credit course & we do both the clinical aspect and the math/calculations combined. @houtxn is that how it is at Alvin??

Silence... I'm not a fan of it.

Lol houtxn, not a fan of the pharm course & question above OR at the fact that we still haven't heard anything??

Haha. Not a fan of not hearing anything yet regarding acceptance.

Oh I know! I thought someone had the inside scoop. .. any new info on when the emails are going out??

Same here! I even left my phone at home on the way to work and turned around to get it because all I could think about is, what if they send out emails today!! Lol. I'm praying its wishing the next few days..

Hi - has anyone applied anywhere else? I applied to San Jac and they keep pushing back the date for emails. It's going on 10 weeks now and no word. Do you know anyone who attended Alvin and if so, what did they say about the nursing program? My husband said someone told him that Alvin has an excellent program, yet my nurse friends told me that hospitals pick San Jac grads first. I don't know what to think. If, by some miracle, I get accepted to both, I have a big decision to make. Any opinions or suggestions?

Thanks and good luck to all of you!!!

I did not apply to San Jac because i just missed the deadline but I have a friend who just finished at San Jac and she loved the program. Of course with any nursing program it takes hardwork & dedication but she told me she got accepted to Lee College in Baytown and San Jac and she chose San Jac because they are well recognized for their program and she had no problem getting a job afterwards! If you chose San Jac I can give you her info maybe she will have some material/advice you can use. On the flipside, I think Alvin is just as good of a program and their stats on NCLEX pass/fail % is pretty impression. You have applied at two very good programs, so best of luck on your decision.

If you are interested, the TX BON publishes the pass rates for each school and they can be found here... https://www.bon.texas.gov/pdfs/education_pdfs/education_programs/RN%205YR-13.pdf

Houtxn,

Wow - thanks for that link. Very interesting to see. Without looking completely ignorant - do you think the passing rate reflects on the teaching/quality of the program or strictly on the way they prepare students for NCLEX OR are those two things one in the same? I'm completely new and don't know if they specifically work on NCLEX preparedness with students or if students prepare solely on their own.

Thanks so much.

I forwarded your question to my friend ans this is her response: "Well it goes hand in hand...cause they test you using NCLEX style questions but it is also up to the student to use additional preparation materials to study for the test..at my school we have a teacher Dr. *** who used to help write the NCLEX exam so she has a side business that you can take to help you prepare as well..and then there is the Kaplan review that I heard was really good that I plan on taking myself next semester..I mean the teachers can only do so much to prepare you but you the student has to do the rest."
