allnurses Time Travel

Published

The allnurses website  has been around since 1997, about 23 years.

I've read some posts where members began visiting the site when they were students, which could mean that they now have nearly a quarter of a century experience in the profession.

Other members have been nurses for periods extending 40 years or more and have been members for years, even decades, on allnurses.

All that time set me to thinking: What if we older members had the advantage of allnurses when we got into the field?

What if we could go back even before the time of the internet, and post? What would we say?

I played around with the idea and came up with what my first post might look like:

Here's what I am requesting that you do:

Enter a date, preferably a month and year, and post as you would as if it actually is that month and year.

You may want to give yourself a different user name, fitting your status at that time.

I will be submitting more time travel post myself and really look forward to reading other members' time travel posts!

So, GET IN THAT WAYBACK MACHINE AND POST!

Allnurses was the first nursing website I found about 6 months after I got my Lpn . I was almost 50 when I got my Lpn . My user name then was Debilpn23.

Sorry, not sure why the pictures posted twice

The unwanted images can be deleted in a couple of ways. I guess the easiest way would be to go back to your post, push the edit button, right click on the image and it'll turn blue. Push the Delete button on the keyboard.

Great to see you again.

Really.

Now I’m a decade older and wiser.

To tell the truth, I’ve missed your unique take on things.

Everything you wrote came across so clearly and with a nifty quirky take.

And now that I’ve changed jobs a few times I’d love to catch up.

I have always admired your writing but can’t PM you. You knew me under another name years ago, and now I’m back. Hope you’re well.

You too, Ruby!

Yeah! This is not The Cheyenne Social Club thread!

That ten post minimum before PMing is difficult to rack up when only sporadically posting.

The who what now social club?  Should I know this?  O.o

And how freaking immature am I that something like that only makes me want to post a reminiscent, rambling diary entry a la 1800's civil war love letter.

"Dearest Rebecca--

The consumption has beset itself upon the men of the encampment and many have already fallen to its ravages....."

Anyway--no worries, Davey.  The conversation was taken offline.

Cheers!

That was fantastic!

We had a great one in the UK called Timeslip.

I challenge anybody of a certain age not to be hooked after one episode!

If it was around when I first got into nursing I would probably have some of the typical new grad "I'm so overwhelmed" "I'm such an idiot" type of posts for sure and I could have used the support.

I'd be there  with you Tweety, and by the way, I think I remember you as 3rdShiftguy!

I came on here in 2004 when I was an occupational health nurse fairly newly arrived in France. I appreciated having an English language resource and even though the site is very US orientated, the International sections have been consistantly interesting.  My posting's been sporadic but I've always kept the same profile. It's regrettable that all the old stuff isn't archived but I realise what a mammouth task that would be.

I've been on British nursung forums (Nursing Times, Runboard Nurses Home where I was a moderator) which folded due to catfights on the boards and infighting amongst the mods, in other words, some bad moderating!

There is a French nursing forum Infirmiers.com which has been going as long as this one. I'm on there sporadically as English Boy. The site is worth a look in if you read French. I think in both cases longevity is the result of good moderating and good management.

If this exisetd in 1986 when I was a new grad in London I'm not sure my posts would have been that interesting, probably more opinionated and less respectful than the hopefully more mature me today. I'd probably have had the screen name Davey Don't!

Hi Everyone,

I use graduated last week from LPN program at the community college. We go to the state capitol next month to take our board exams. It’s a 2 day test with everone from the entire state there since the board exam are only scheduled twice a year. We are going to stay in a motel before driving back home. Then the wait for the mailman to see if you passed can take a couple of months. The class before us said if you get a small envelope that’s your nursing license, but if it’s a large envelope, it’s the application to reapply to take the test again. I was hired as a new graduate LPN in labor & delivery, kinda  scared. I will be responsible for preparing the mom in labor by shaving her in a “poodle prep” and giving her the enema. I also have to do the Apgar score on the baby, put the eye drops in & take baby in an isolette to the nursery upstairs! My parents are not happy with me because I decided to wait a year before going on to get my Associate as RN. I’m just not sure if I want the responsibility of being an RN at 20 years old. Heck in my class there were 6 of us that started at 18, we have to drive to Texas to buy beer! We joke in class that we can carry narcotic keys but can’t buy liquor in our state. And since  L&D wear OR scrubs I won’t have to wear my nursing cap! It won’t stay on,every time I turn my head it slides around. I am going to keep taking full load of classes in case I do decide to keep working as a nurse for a while & in case I want to get my Bachelors since there is no local school to get a BSN. So excited to be a new nurse.

Ha! Great!

I have a character by that name, sort of the evil twin of Davey Do. Fact is, here is an old one referencing the Time Tunnel!

And here's one related to our field:

As I said in another thread, DavidFR, you have done some interesting things. Your posts are a joy to read!

And, thanks for the link to the time travel centered TV show!

What an interesting read, TeenageLPN! Wow! How exciting!

I'm 20 years old and I just took a First Aid course at Larry & Curly Community College, but wow! you're a nurse!

I like the TV show Emergency! and thought about becoming a paramedic.

Who knows?

Thanks for your submission, TeenageLPN!

I found this portion of your post interesting, Pollywog. The Illinois LPN boards back in '84, when I took them, were a one day test. We had the option of going to Springfield, the state capital, or to Carbondale on the SIU campus.

I knew my classmates, both from the LPN program, and again in 1990 for the RN program, would be testing in Springfield, as it is closer to the area in which we all lived. I opted to travel the extra distance to Carbondale. My reasoning was that I wouldn't be as distracted with seeing and/or hanging out with my former classmates.

The RN state boards were a two day testing process. I drove down the day before the tests started and got a motel room. Then, I went to the SIU campus and found the auditorium where the testing would take place. I sat in the auditorium and studied the area. I believe if I knew the area, while testing, I would not be distracted by looking around.

I sat there for a time, closed my eyes at times, and deep breathed. The next day, when it came time to take the test, I sat in the same place as the day before, feeling comfortable with my surroundings. In between testing sessions, I sat there, closed my eyes, and deep breathed.

I took the RN state boards in the Spring, I believe it was May, of '90. Results weren't due to be received until September.

I discussed the small/large envelope thing with a coworker friend RN. He told me that whether you passed or not, the envelope size was the same. He knew this because his LPN wife, who went on to become an RN, failed the state boards twice before passing on the third attempt.

So, when I got to the post office, and saw the envelope, I hurriedly tore it open and made sure I saw the word PASS!

I danced around the post office lobby loudly proclaiming, "I passed! I passed!"
