I've noticed that I really don't have any close, non-nurse friends. All my friends are RNs.
Over the years, here and there, I've befriended fellow nurses in various units.
I'm not opposed to being friends with non nurses, but that's the way it's gone. All my friends are nurses.
I have some old friends that have drifted away into little more than liking stuff on Facebook.
I enjoy the company of the nurses I work with, they really can bring some lively conversation into the workplace, and for a mostly stay at home mom like me, they are great to have around. I wouldn't call any of them friends though.
Somehow I get my social needs met through the friendship I have with my husband, sister and mother. My relationship with my inner circle is rock solid and I see my husband daily, my sister weekly and my mother twice a week. For an introvert, this is plenty socializing.
My ex best friend would talk **** about nursing, I hated it. That was one of the reasons I quit hanging out with her. I couldn't stand listening to her bash my profession. I refuse to be friends with who isn't beneficial to my life.
I don't mean to thread hijack, but I experienced some nurses today who chronically complained at work all shift about how bad it was and how horrible their pts and doctors are. We all complain somewhat....but if this is her everyday work demeanor.... I'm amazed anyone can stand to work with her...

She only lasted as a nurse for 3 months.
