Algebra nightmare

Published

I am in Beginning algebra and struggling. I am going to a tutor whenever I can and I am able to do it with them however when getting it home or on a quiz/test I just stare and have no clue where to begin. Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble or is it just me? I have been thinking about dropping it but dont want to, thats only the easy way out and will prob. have to take it anyway one of these days. I know there is good websites but would like to find one that explains it to you over the speakers type thing, does anyone know of anything like that?

Algebra hates me and I hate it right back! I'm about to go back to school for nursing after being a pilot for almost ten years. A high school counselor told me that to be a pilot you need to be good in math and science, WHAT A CROCK of BS! Anyway I have to take intermediate algebra followed by college algebra and I'm scared to death of it. Really makes me wanna..:barf01:

Flying and math are equally terrifying for me. I can't stand the feeling of not having any solid ground under my feet :uhoh3: I am so TERRIFIED of flying, especially after a negative experience during a flight from Europe to the US, that I haven't done so in over 20 years. Sometimes you just have to look death in the eye, hold your breath and pray that you will survive.....I did that in Chemistry and got a B. Math will always be my enemie, I'll learn Chinese backwards before I'll learn math

Oh, and I forgot the dentist......I am TERRIFIED of dentists, too.....you got to hit me over the head and drag me by the hair to get me to go....

AAAHHHH! Math is evil! I'm retaking the remedial class before algebra and then college algebra this summer. I got C's and that aint gonna fly down here to get into a nursing program. The math dept. head at my school suggests taking summer or mini-session classes if math is a challenge for you. Sometimes it's easier to just focus on one class not leave many days inbetween to forget what you're doing. Also, I barely got a B in chem because of all the math. Dimensional analysis is a b$#@! Best of luck, may the force be with you!

Congratulations on your B in chem! Great job, it wasn't an easy class. I had college algebra during the summer for 8 weeks, and went to school every day, got a B and was totally thrilled....I think it was a good idea just to take it by itself and have it every day like your department suggested. I am now dreading statistics which I will take in the near future.

I was scared to death of statistics but it actually was alot easier than algebra. The nice thing about statistics is that there isn't just one exact answer, there's a range. At my school there are 2 different stats classes, one general math and one for psychology. I found out later that the psych one is supposed to be easier so you may want to check into that.

Sounds like you know what you're doing but when you get home, you're looking too much into the equations/problems. Just refer to the notes you had with the tutor and follow the steps. Don't look too much into it.

I'll check which one I need, good to know that it won't be as bad as algebra.

thanks

Been there ...done that....

THE problem with math instruction IMHO, is the quality of instruction.

I would STRONGLY suggest you look at computer based instructions.

My problem with this was I never got math. Then, years later, I saw a movie called "Stand and Deliver". It is a flick about an inner city teacher in Los Angeles who wants to teach kids Advanced Placement Calculus.

At one point in the movie, the actor playing the teacher says, "whenever you see a parenthesis sign, you multiply". DUH..... It was like this great big light bulb went on in my head.

My algebra teacher was the football coach. Go Figure....

But that one "little" piece of NON information made a LARGE difference.

Computer based programs are unlikely to miss those basic points...and others.

hopes this helps...den.

I hate Math & especially its Algebra. I've got Math 90 (elementary algebra:rolleyes: ) as a pre-req. It's my second time around so I cannot afford to fail it. On our first major test (2 weeks ago) I got a 76% which is a C and I'm freaking out because as y'all know, it's all about the A-students when it comes to nursing. This sucks.

I'm taking intro to Algebra right now, which is a high school level class. I was dreading it because I hadn't taken a math class in 15 years, but it's not so bad. There is a required computer math lab with this class, so even though it is time consuming, it forces you to keep up. And there are instructional aides in the math lab, so you can ask questions when you get stuck. I plan on taking Math A, which is actual college level algebra, over the summer. Since the summer classes are only 8 weeks long, it will be pretty intense, but then I will be DONE with math ! (except all the math in chemistry)

hi everyone,

just wanted to mention to anyone taking pre-requisite courses in math to check with your counselor/advisor if you can make those classes (elementary algebra, intermediate algebra or any remedial math class) a credit/no credit class and that way it wont harm your GPA. I am actually taking intermediate algebra which is a pre-requisite to get into statistics or college algebra -and Im making it count as a credit/no credit class so it wont harm my GPA...check into that..it might be helpful. bye bye and good luck everyone!
