Nursing is my second career. My first was as a flight attendant for a big airline. One night over the bond, we hit some air, and I came off the floor, and the middle of my foot landed on a bottle top from a liter water. I heard a pop, and it was decided to take me to the local hospital in Brighton, England upon arrival. My foot was fine, but what really got me was the decor of the ER. It seems that in an effort to raise funds, the walls in the ER waiting room are up for advertising rent. Care to guess who advertises on those walls??? Malpractice attorneys.....sheesh.

First male nurses in the 80s? Somebody is sleeping... When I was a Vista Volunteer in 1975, one of our group was going into nursing....and it started long before that... The first man to be commissioned in the Army Nurse Corps was Edward Lyon, a nurse Anesthetist from Kings Park, NY. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on October 10, 1955. John Ciudad (1495-1550) founded the order of the brothers of St. John of God or the Brothers of Mercy in (1538). He opened a hospital in Grenada and asked a group of friends to assist in providing care to the mentally ill, homeless, crippled, derelicts, and abandoned children. Polka Dot... Thanks so much. I start Nursing School in the fall, and had lost all my notes in a computer crash last year. I am now a FIRM believer in external hard drives. We even used the Marieb text. You are a true lifesaver. I do have to admit, you are much better at notes than I am... denv:specs:

Been there ...done that.... THE problem with math instruction IMHO, is the quality of instruction. I would STRONGLY suggest you look at computer based instructions. My problem with this was I never got math. Then, years later, I saw a movie called "Stand and Deliver". It is a flick about an inner city teacher in Los Angeles who wants to teach kids Advanced Placement Calculus. At one point in the movie, the actor playing the teacher says, "whenever you see a parenthesis sign, you multiply". DUH..... It was like this great big light bulb went on in my head. My algebra teacher was the football coach. Go Figure.... But that one "little" piece of NON information made a LARGE difference. Computer based programs are unlikely to miss those basic points...and others. hopes this helps...den.

Different schools place a different emphasis on some things. The school that I am doing my pres at requires nutrition. Another local school , has pharmacology as a pre. Just different emphasis. I also have nutrition this semester. Just took my first college test in 31 years and am NOT hopeful. I was fully prepared to trace the GI tract, and explain the impact of glucagon, insulin , and bile on digestive process. Unfortunately, I missed things like cheese, and portions of fruit in my study. Things have changed in education. A friend kindly suggested that when trying to understand the concept of nurses eating their young, that it starts a long time before you even get accepted into an RN program. You have a very good point, but think of this as nurse boot camp. They are the commanding officers, and they control the programs.
