If you were a career changer what did you do before?

Specializes in Skilled Nursing/Rehab.

I was 38 years old when I decided to go back to school for nursing. I had been a middle school music teacher for 8 years.

I was 55 when I made the decision to become a nurse. It came after a long career in journalism and electronic media. I got my BSN at 60, and am now on track to get my master's at age 64. I only wish I'd become a nurse about 30 years earlier.

I got my LPN license in Feb. 2014 at age 40 - just finished my associates degree on Wednesday, so age 41! Still have to take my boards...hopefully Jan. 9-10.

Interested in nursing and made the decision between 14 and 16. Influenced by Candystriping experience and nurses that were introduced to me by my father who worked in healthcare. Life got in the way, so actual nursing turned into a second career rather than the only career.

I think I came out of the womb wanting to be a nurse. I can remember being 4 or 5 and always playing 'nurse' or 'hospital'. My play always entailed some sort of medical thing. Playing animal nurse w/my stuffed animals as well as the real living breathing pets we had, playing hospital with my neighbor next door (who also went on to become a nurse). Earliest proof other than my memory, my mom has pictures of me at ages 3 and 4 dressed as a nurse for Halloween. She tells the story of how she tried to change my mind to go as somthing else as at the time it was the costumes with the plastic masks and cheepy clothing or whatever it was that was store bought. She said I threw my only 2 temper tantrums those two Halloween-times when I was insistant that I was going as a nurse.

I took me a long time to finally realize my dream/goal. But here I am :)

If you think I am bad, one of the admins is approaching 90,000 posts, yet I rarely see any of those posts. Have always wondered where they are. And another member literally quit before reaching 60,000, as I remember. Miss reading their posts. There are others that I miss seeing around. Keep on coming back hoping to see they have returned to the conversations. A cheap place to waste time! You can always use the ignore function you know.

Nah, you ain't 'bad'. I was just drop-jawed when I noticed that number, that's all.

90,000 posts, huh? Now THAT is awe-inspiring!

Especially since I can't find most of them! Amazing what we amuse ourselves with, ehh? (Waiting for football to start on TV)

I first felt called towards it after giving birth to my son, I was 22. After I had my daughter at 25 I knew i wanted to do nursing and possibly pursue midwifery and I started taking classes a year after my daughter was born.

I too started feeling inspired after the birth of my oldest. Nurse made the difference in my experience. I went on to become a doula and then I got pregnant again. After my successful HBAC (homebirth after Cesarean) I knew that's what I wanted to do. Be an OPTION of evidence based care for pregnant women. That was last Thanksgiving at 26 years old. I just finished my first semester of prerequisites and waiting for my acceptance letter. If so I start in the summer at 27, hopefully graduate at 29. Got a long way to go to pursue midwifery but alas it's a start.

I decided when I was 15, my sophomore year in high school. My favorite aunt was a nurse and I loved all her cute scrubs!! Lol later on after I learned more I fell in love with nursing
