Hi Everyone,
This is my second time posting today. The first was under another forum, but basically the same question. Can anyone give me advise on the pre-entrance exam? I am horrible in math and need to know how much math/algebra there is on the exam. I am four classes away from finishing my non-nursing classes, which I plan on finishing between now and the end of summer. I was hoping to start the part-time nursing program this fall at the Shadyside nursing school in Pittsburgh. If I have to take an algebra class too, I might not be able to start in the fall because at present time, there is no way that I can undertake another class due to the fact that I have four children and would probably lose my mind if I attempted it! So I'm trying to figure out if I might be able to pass the math without an algebra class. I would really appreciate any info/advise on this matter. I also wanted to know if there is anyone out there who has attended or is still attending Shadyside nursing school and what you think about it. I recently heard the school only accepts 50 part-time students each fall. Does anyone know if that is true? I surely hope it's not, because I can only attend part-time.
Thanks in advance to all that reply.

Hi K.A.T.
Well, is this the NLN? If so, I would highly suggest getting the NLN Pre-entrance Exam study guide - it has good info on the math section, so if you study it first and then attempt the test sections, see where you are not scoring so high and study some more. That is the best advice I can give you...that will be your best study guide if it is for the NLN. If not, then I would find out if there is a study guide for the type of test you are taking. If your not sure on the type of test, ask your school and go from there!
Best of luck!!!!

If it is the Nurse Entrance Test (NET) there is a specific study guide for it called The NET, The HOBIT and the HELP.

I know what you are going through. I have four kids too. If you are taking the net, find out what study guide your school wants you to use. I used the NET study guide from http://www.eriworld.com. It has been many years since I had Algebra in high school. I just kept practicing over and over again the math section in the study guide and I did great. I also got some add'l books like "Algebra for dummies" out of the library but I didn't really need to reference them. You will do fine. Keep in mind that if they do want you to take an Algebra class you could ask them if they will let you CLEP out of the class. You can then just self study for the class and take the test over the summer and still start your program in the fall. Good Luck!

I applied to 2 different schools, I took the NET at one and the HESI at the other. I did buy the study guide for the HESI; I did well on both, but I have had college Algebra, and I am strong in Math. Both tests that I took included the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions as well as decimals. They also had a section on ratios. If getting a study guide is not an option, you can go to the library to check out generic "pre-nursing entrace exam study guides" they won't be tailored to your test, but they cover the kind of qustions most pre-exams will cover just try to get the most recently published one you can. Good Luck!

I just took the exam for shadyside and it is not that bad. I have not had any math classes since high school which were at least 12+ yrs ago. Averages, percents, fractions, decimals, a couple conversions, a few ratio problems but nothing super intense. There were two problems that I knew how to do, but time was a factor and I took an educated guess:uhoh21:.
If you are studying the books they recommended you should do fine. I should know in a week or two if I passed.
GOOD LUCK!

I completed the NLN this past Saturday and passed. You must obtain a 50% of higher cummulative grade for PJC. Each section has 80 questions-timed test. There is not a lot of time. Vocab is not simple vocab...need to study up on word roots. Reading comprehension...basics but don't take a lot of time reading because there is not a lot of time. Read the questions first so you know what you are looking for. Math is fractions, percentages, algebraic equations, know your algebra rules for signs, proportions, perimeters of triangle. Definitely need to know the metric unit conversions for KING HENRY..GRAMS TO MILLI, etc, need to know supplementary angle is 180, intersection of lines, convert Celcius and Farenheit, Kelvin conversion. Science was hard but the NLN study guide would be a great help. Diffusion and osmosis, ATP, concentration gradients, plant parts-cuticle, blood, erythrocytes are responsible for, frog skin cell type, Boyle's Law, anerobic respiration, lactic acid build-up causes cramps, tendons connect muscles kidneys and excretion of blood and sugar in urine means, sperm reside in testes, pap smear scrapes cervix, question about the eye, cone and rode, eye parts, retina iris,, basic chemistry coved the atomic number, proton, neutron, and electron make-up, isotopes, tincture, salt solutes, chemical and physical changes, Boyle's Law, activation energy, catalysts, newton human body weight, gravity rules, period and cycles of a wave, Coulombs law, food web....there is just a "few" haha things that my NLN book covers. I would highly recommend doing the exercises and taking a few months to prepare for the test. Oh, and bring ear plugs. I am so ADD-the time really stressed me out and the noise...argh! Good luck to everyone with entrance exams and remember to prepare, study, prepare....It is an expensive test to have to retake and you can only take it once every 6 months.

I never thought of using ear plugs to study ! I think I am ADD also. Tough to focus sometimes. Noises bother me too (escpecially when I am trying to study) Do you use them alot to study ? That is a great tip. I worked for an oral surgeon many moons ago too. Loved it and miss it. Thank you !

what test are you taking? hesi or something else? i ordered the hesi study guide from elsevier. we only had to take the grammar, reading and math sections and i received a's on all three. i stressed entirely too much over it and it was a breeze compared to what i was making it out to be, you know.
you should maybe check your reserve room where you are enrolled, they should have a study guide for whichever test you need to take and you can look at and decide if you wish to purchase or you can reserve a copy through your local library and have it for a couple of weeks. just some suggestions, i did all of the above and just ended up buying it so i could go over it whenever i wanted and not have to wait for it to come in.....
