Advice for Canadian RN Exam

Published

Hi, I have a quick question for those of you who are currently studying for the RN exam in June in Toronto.

Do you know of any prep classes? Or study groups available.?

Any advice as to how to study for the RN exam would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.. :)

I have heard that the CRNE booklet is a great tool!

Hello,

I wrote my test last year. There are courses you can take in community colleges that are ok. Humber college offers one. The only thing is that it is costly. If you don't want to go that route get a really good Book that will help. I am not sure what the newer books are, try asking some of your professors if they can recommend any.

I hope this helps.

Check out your local colleges/university libraries for books.

Review your areas that you do not feel that you have a good grasp.

Does your school over MOCK exams? That will assist you in seeing what area you may be weak in.

Does the CNO have a book or manual that allows you to have a test run? We did get one back in 1993. Call them to see.

Hope this helps.

in my opinion, studying for the Canadian Registered Nurses Exam (CRNE) is a joke! most of my classmates studied the last week before our test date and we all passed...most of it are pyschosocial questions, so it's a good idea to remember your "self & others" courses from nursing school.....and just basic nursing care...

if you have the red book, just study from that....that's all you can really do....do the practice questions until you have memorized all of the answers! it's not really an effective way to study, but unfortunately there aren't many study guides out there that can prepare you for this exam....and the practice test from the red book is basically what you will see on the CRNE.....thats what all of my classmates and i did to prepare...

sorry i don't know much about the new short answer format questions, because i took my exam last august...thank god!

good luck to you!

this subject depends knowing what works for you... for my exams (Canadian and NCLEX) i bought a thick book of exam questions... i made a goal of doing a certain number and doing them as if i was in the actual exam, w/ a time limit. i applied this method when i was well rested and had time to do many questions. i also tried to do some questions when i got home from work. on the average i did about 10 questions. for each method i would review the question/topic that i got wrong and make note of it. on the days that i didnt feel like doing questions i would review the notes on the topics/questions that i got wrong... eventually i ended up w/ about 30 pages. .. anyhow, this is what worked for me. good luck.

Hi

I would suggest the CRNE prep guide 3rd edition and also if you can get the 2nd edition from the library to practise questions. I would also recommend online test of 100 questions from CNA website and if you go under the section of RN exam in CNA website they are also going to publish a new guide with mutiple questions and fill in the blank questions sometime in March or April. Maybe you can purchase and practise to get an idea of the questions.

I also suggest to test some nclex questions though they are not as psychological tested as the canadian exam questions.

I agree with one of the posting reply of timing your questions which is important factor in any exam. I hope you are aware that there is book 1 and book 2 for CRNE exam. As of CRNE Jan 2004 had questions ranging from 132-135 in book 1 with 3.5 hrs and this also applies to book 2 exam of course not all the questions are counted towards your score as some are experimental questions. Well this jan they increased the number of questions book 1 had 142 questions and book 2 had 143 questions with the same time frame of each 3.5 hrs. So time yourself careful as you don't want to miss a question. I don't know they might increase the time as there are fill in the blank questions. U have to search on this!!

1st.. congrats

2nd get the CNRE prep guide ASAP. The guide tells you what to do if you have less than two weeks to prepare... I would pop the cd that comes with it into the puter... it is the exact same questions as the book but the computer does the scoreing (ie time is of the essence). I would also take the online LEARN test with is another 100 question which are totally different than those in the book/cd. I would generally study the areas you feel you are weakest in. The quesitions are very "self & other" orientated as well as lots of critical thinking skills. My only concern is getting used to the Short answer questions (which is brand new... lucky us :uhoh21: ).

Best of luck, pm me if you like

Hello there, I've just joined allnurses.com and read your message. I've just started studying for the CRNE and would really appreciate opportunity to exchange opinions/ideas regarding the exam. I'm presently working in the UK but hope to nurse in British Columbia (Vancouver) soon.

I think you said that you are due to take the exam in June 2005, which means you like me will be sitting the new exam which incorporates 'short answer questions'. Do you know of anyone that's been successful with the exam. Basically, I'm just keen to gather info and ideas.

Anyway, if you get a chance get back to me.

Cheers, Jamieson.

Call the universites up and ask if they have any instructor/professor that can tutor or they can suggest a prep class. Kaplan may have a Canadian RN prep class? Good Luck:Melody:

Hi Artis, thanks for the reply, the problem being I'm in England. I'll probably be sitting the CRNE later this year, I've managed to get hold of a CRNE Prep Guide and it's a useful tool but I think I'd benefit from, like you suggested, a one to one tutorial or at least a fellow exam taker to study, talk and exchage ideas with etc.

Thanks anyway, appreciate the your time.

Hi all,

I just wrote the CRNE last Wednesday.

Yes...it was hard.

The CRNE prep guide helped only with the types of questions but don't count on it be the only thing you need to study.

I suggest going over your med-surg notes a few times.

Also questions on maternity were to be found.

Hardly any psych (my specialty) and none on current issues.

And just a lot of those - 2 answers were right scenerios.

AHHHH...I'm glad it's over but to have to wait 9-13 weeks for results is nothing but frustrating..
