Hello everyone! I have been accepted into my community college ADN program and will beginning in March 2013. The anticipation is killing me but I will be working hard as a waitress until then to save as much money as possible. I have no experience in the medical field and hope to begin volunteering this fall in a hospital. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on what to do to prepare. I know this is a common question. I'm looking into buying a medical terminology book because my program does not require this as a pre-req and I'm not familiar with many medical terms. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

If it is not a pre req then they don't expect you to know it befor entering. Your classes will teach you what you need to know about medical termanology. If you want a quick reference I wouldn't spend all that money on a textbook instead I would get a Quick Study on medical termanology they sell they on amazon.com...
Amazon.com: Medical Terminology:The Basics (Quick Study Academic) (9781572225381): Inc. BarCharts: Books
The thing is packed with terms and its a lot cheaper and user friendly than a text book, it would even be good to take with you in your clinical bag!

I would also start to familiarize yourself with the metric system, if you don't have a strong background in science. Most any technical field these days, including nursing, requires a knowledge of the metric system, which is really what the whole world uses, except for us "exceptional" Americans. It's probably not practical, but if you could find a quick way to bone up on Latin and Greek word roots, that would help a lot with the medical terminology. If you have time, look up some of the online nursing magazines, and just read some of the articles to get used to the type of reding you will have. Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask for help.
