ADN Curriculum.. does this look right?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi everyone, this is what my school considers their curriculum for graduating with an ASN degree. Does it look right though? It seems everyone else on this website has much harder classes, or has most of these classes as pre-requisites.

[[sem 2 has a mistake obviously, with the pharmacology and Nursing care classes, but I'm going to switch that around.]]

Thanks everyone!

Total credits required for graduation with Associate's degree

All program requirements must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

Looks okay to me, although most programs requires all prereqs to be done before the program... thats the only thing that looks off.

Is it accredited? What is the NCLEX pass rate? Those are two important factors.

Looks normal to me except for the heavy dose of gee-whiz, fancy pants words. The class titles are different but I still see fundamentals, pharmacology, pathophysiology, psychiatric nursing, OB, speech, leadership etc.... all the usual suspects.

Get ALL of your general education requirements out of the way. If you can help it, avoid taking having to take them while in the nursing program. Don't think "Oh, it's just art" or "Oh, it's just the PE requirement." I've seen so many eat their words. Just don't do it.

Thanks for replying! Yes it is accredited, but Idk what the NCLEX pass rate is. I have my CNA class here and they teach great & have a high certification rate (for those who actually pay attention- i have a lot of crappy classmates!) It's a highly recommended school so I would assume the pass rate is above average.

The pre-reqs are Human Bio, Fund of Chm, and Alg/Geo I, as well as what is included in the "preadmission semester" A&P II, Intro to Psych, Fresh Rhet&Comp., so yes they must be taken before the program acceptance, which is what I'm currently working on.

Cuddles, I only need 71 credits to graduate which is all of these classes. I wil have more than that by time of graduation because I have an extra sem of pre-reqs to take.

I'd suggest moving micro to a summer session. It's not a horrible class, but it would free up some time during the semester load. :)

Thanks! I was actually thinking about taking that in Sem 2 & switching pharm2&NUR155 to the summer sem.instead. Not sure yet!

I think what they meant was to take the classes like AP1, AP2, Micro, Comm, Nutritition, etc etc before you start your nursing classes so that you will not be so overwhelmed. Will you be working during the program?

My school (ADN) also lists a similar course of study, but in reality you won't get accepted into the nursing classes unless you have all of your prereqs done already. Except for a few people who are missing a prereq or two, everyone gets those done first and only does about 8-12 credits of nursing classes per semester, split into 4 semesters. I'm in my OB/peds semester now, it's 10 credits for this one course and I can't imagine having time for another class as well.

Oh, I understand. So the Micro, A&P II, Etc., are all pre-reqs they just incoporated them in the curriculum... Hm that makes more sense now!!

Yes, I will be working as a CNA during this.

So taking more than on nursing class at a time during sems 3&4, wow! That must be a lot to take in learning all those nursing practices at once!

See because on this page, this is supposed to be all the pre-reqs so I'm confused lol

It seems like you'd take A&P I and II before you took any of the nurse work.

Ditto to taking all pre-reqs first.

Also, I don't think you can move your actual nursing classes around...such as Pharm....you have to take it the semester it's scheduled for. You don't have that luxury of choosing which nursing courses you want to take first....they have the program planned out for you and you have to follow it. BUT like everyone else said.....your pre-reqs you can take before gaining entrance into the program.
