Just wondering who's starting the awesome journey with me? I went to orientation and now its starting to feel real!!
I'm not scheduled to begin nursing school until Jan. 2012, with my first orientation on Sept. 12th. Earlier today I received an unexpected phone call from my program wanting to know if there was any chance I'd be interested in starting next Monday. The only problem with this is that we need to have a current CNA when we start and mine has lapsed. Needless to say, I am kicking myself right now for not taking my recertification tests sooner! I've been enjoying my lazy summer since it's the first semester I've had off in two years. She did say to get it done as soon as possible because they always lose people in the first couple of weeks for numerous reasons and that they may still have spots to fill. As soon as I got off of the phone with her I scheduled my test and now either way, I will be ready to go! At first I was kind of freaking out thinking "How am I going to do this with such short notice?", but now I'm a little bummed that I may have missed my chance to graduate a semester early. I know that there's still a small chance to get into this class, but I'll just have to deal with whatever happens. At least I can relax knowing that I have a place in the January class.
Yesterday was the first day of nursing school! It was like a mini orientation to reinforce the information we had this summer. We were given a breakdown of what will be covered in lecture. I have started reading but it is alot. I have to stay positive. I know I can do it I just have to be on top of things and not procrasinate. 30 minutes of internet entertainment is all I will allow myself. Congrats to everyone and hope to see good news posted on this thread.
Thursday was a "Survival Skills" orientation - most of which was useless - they had a speaker on how to "critically read" and another one that was supposed to be on time management and all he wound up talking about was his wonderful nurse daughter and God (neither of which I'm interested in)...
School starts Monday and I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas!
Last week we had a three day Orientation Workshop:
Introductions, syllabus, reading assignment, uniforms issued, met with seniors and recent graduates. Critical thinking, study/reading techniques, team building, study for learning type, nutrition and stress, at the end we had a dinner that we all had to cook for, and families were invited.
We found out about our last book we had to buy, a Clinical Bag I am not sure if this is mandatory or for extra practice at home? For $60 I am going to wait.
Our Blackboard is set up. I love having my schedule for the entire semester now.
I was really stressed and hardly slept, but after these three days I feel better. I started making some new school friends.
We have a student that sits in the front row, and has way too many questions, is too perky for me. I don't really mind but I have a feeling she is going to make class go over a lot.
We have a few students that were late all three days, some by 45 minutes. I don't get it?
Overall it was a great experience, I loved the professors I met. I can't believe they want us to use their first name.
The concept of cumulative finals is new and shocking to a lot of students in my class, which I find funny and interesting.
We got our Evolve account set up, I have gone through a lot of the modules and the skills already.
We have our first test 9/12 and find out our clinical assignment on 9/3 I can't wait.
We are half way through first semester and its been awesome and exhausting. We have had four tests, dosage calc exam, research. paper, group project, an interview, and several check offs. I have an 86 exam average and I'm hoping my daily grades and dosage calc exams will bring me up to an a.
Congrats studentnursect on getting half way through first semester intact :-)
We are halfway through the semester too! We've had one project, 2 exams, dosage tests, and countless skills tests that we've already completed. We are now done for the semester for clinical skills tests (still have clinical, but it all for experience for the rest of the semester), and we have 2 more exams and then a comp final left to do. It has FLOWN by! I complain a lot about how time consuming and tiring it is, but I really am LOVING it so far. Lets hope I can still say that come next semester...med/surg. I hear that'll be a real doozy :-/ lol
Half way done with my semester too :) We have had 3 nursing exams, 1 drug calculation test, and 1 pharmacology test. I have been pulling my grades up slowly but surely. I ready for my break. Don't think I will be working during the break. Only my everyother weekend. I am exhausted! Yesterday I found out I will be awarded another scholarship so I am super excited.
