Admission denied to Mount Saint Marys ADN 2013 Spring

Published

Recently I applied to Moung St Marys ADN program. I didn't get it :-( I did good on the TEAS test and had all but one of my pre-reqs done (I still need english 1C ). I am so sad because I practically considered myself in. When I called the school to find out why I was denied admission the main counselor told me that everything looked great but my gpa isn't high enough and I was off by a few points (2.65 I needed 2.75) and that I also need to take the English class I am missing. She said I can re-apply again in March after I Better my GPA and that i'll probably get in. I am so lost because since then I have been looking at other schools and have ran into so many dead ends. For example West Coast University is 134, 000$!!!! And American College of Health Sciences doesn't have accreditations. I am currently trying to add an English class at my local jc but because I am a returning student I get to enroll last and now all classes are taken! Any words of encouragement or advice?

why don't you want to go to a cc, Mount st. mary's nclex pass rate for their adn program is in the 70 percentile..

A 2.65 GPA is extremely low for just about any RN program. Most schools have a cut-off around 3.4 or 3.5. Just because they say the MINIMUM GPA required is a 2.75 does not mean that's the cut-off. My school's minimum GPA requirement is a 2.8. But the director told me she's never seen anyone with less than a 3.4 get accepted, and the typical cut-off is around a 3.6-3.8. I would re-take some of your pre-reqs, get better grades and increase your GPA, and re-apply to some more schools.

Moved to California State Nursing Programs.

Im actually doing that now... thank you.. I will be applying to as many schools as I can and maybe I will have happier news to share next time around!

@X_factor: very true about the GPA "requirements". I will re-take at least to pre-reqs in which I got C's in and try again. Thank you for the advice

Hi! Just reapply! Get that GPA to a 3.0 or better and take that English class. I too am in the LA area and have been going around in circles with nursing schools and I'm just blown away by how much WCU and other private colleges charge, its just a little outrageous. I almost signed up for WCU but thank god I didn't...honestly though, I would have had to take out 4 different loans (I don't qualify for pell grants) to pay for it! I mean with $134,000 I could get 3 different college degrees with that amount or money! And once I become a nurse it would take over 3 years to make that $$$ back! No thank you WCU! My sister in law went to Mt St Marys she liked the program but she didn't like the fact that alot of people dropped out of or didn't pass the NCLEX at MT St Mary's. She says she wishes she would have just gone to a community or state college for her nursing as it is cheaper. Private schools just suck all the money out of you and put you in major debt. My sister in law dropped out of St Mary's 6 years ago and is still paying her loans off from St Mary's, in fact, they started garnishing her paycheck a couple of years ago because she wasn't making payments on time.

I recently discovered that in LA, they are phasing out the ADN and most places in the LA area are now only hiring BSN nurses, so you might want to think about going for your BSN instead. Have you thought about also applying to community colleges or state college nursing programs? Have you looked at Cal State LA? It's a BSN program...They have a 2.7 minimum GPA (But still shoot for a 3.0+ for better chance of getting in) and they have great NCLEX pass rate. They only have like 6 prereqs & tuition is also reasonable there.

More than likely, I will be putting all my eggs into one basket-Western Governers University. I "may" also apply to Cal State LA as well, I'm still sorting that out. I hope to finish my prereqs by Aug/Sept 2013, then apply to nursing school in Oct/Nov 2013. :)

If you have any questions or just want to chat about anything nursing related you can PM me.

I am going to be going to WCU, a lot of people leave out the fact that WCU costs 133k if you dont have ANY pre-reqs, including Nursing and General ED. if you transfer all your pre-reqs the cost acutally drops down quite a bit to about 70k (give or take a couple thousand)

My pre-req gpa is 2.69.. i was rejected from all of the nursing programs ive applied to, I can not retake my nursing pre-reqs as my school has a policy that if you pass the class with a C you cant retake it.,. ive already taken anatomy once before and ifailed the first tiem and got a C the second time. alot of nursing schools also have a policy where you can repeat a nursing pre-req only once maximum before you are disqualified. so i cant take it anywhere else..

also another point i want to make is that Cal States are rediculously competitive, I have a friend who has a 3.8 Pre-req GPA and the councelior told him his chances are IFFY at best.. and Plus he wont be able to start nursing school till Fall next year or Spring of 2014!

I am going to start Nursing school in April of next year!

Calinursingstudent is right about alot of places are prefering BSN over ADN nowadays, hence why i am skipping all the crap and paying the extra money and starting sooner and finishing my BSN earlier than some of my pre-nursing classmates..

agian ill repeat this though WCU ONLY COSTS 133k IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY PRE-REQS (GE's and Nursing pre reqs) DONE!!!

Hi calinursesstudent818 thank you for your reply. Your advice was really helpful. Im having alot to think about... I had not considered applying to any cal states but after your fees back I looked up cal state la and ill be applying as well as other jcs.

ok, really good point on the tuition for Wcu bot being 133k if we have transferrable units... and also mt sait marys ADN program is 64k for two years so if I think about it a few more grand and I will be obtaining my bsn and without all the bull crap. I visited wcu in north Hollywood last week actually and the rep told me that I could start in april as well.... he even set me up with a fin aid person to go over that... maybe I should go and see what they tell me. When I was there though, some guy who also went for the info session said he was talking to a girl who said that they raise prices out of no where and if you think about it with interest your looking at 100k. If you dont mind me asking, have you gone through the fin aid process? Do yoy know exactly how much you are paying exactly? And how many loans did you have to take out? Sorry, another question, are you taking the entrance exam?

I am not from Cali I am from PA and I had that same issue with one school about 2 years ago so I transfered to another community college and took some classes there to get a new GPA. If I were you, I would try and take some classes over and take some extra classes to increase my GPA. Just because the minimum GPA requirement is a 2. whatever does not mean you are going to get in they will take other's who/s GPA's are way higher. Also remmeber that erverything happens for a reason, it just wasn't your time hun and your time will eventually come, good luck :)

a Bsn is worth much more in its weight in gold now adays..

The process is acutally VERY Fast, but i hear it varies from campus to campus, i went through the Orange County Campus. Im not quite sure about the raising of the prices, ive heard one ot two people say that but i dont know to what degree its accurate, im sure they raise it less than the Cal States (they raise theirs like every year 7% or something rediculous) Yes with the intrest is gonna cost me around 100k but i plan to refinance after school to get a better rate and maybe even pay extra so i can pay it off..

The Financial Aid is very straight forward acutally they pretty much do everything for you, as of now i qualify for 45K in FInancial Aid and another 45 k in private loans which i am approved for. They break everything down to the T in Financial aid and explain everything quite well.. i was acutally pretty satisfied with the financial aid.. Now my projected costs are about 100k right now, but I am still taking a few classes that i am going to transfer (about 5) so that cost is going to go down quite a bit (not sure how much exactly my guess is down to about 70-80k..

I took the TEAS Test earlier this year so i submitted that score, they accepted it. (i scored a 70.7%)

i heard the HESI is easier. let me know if you have any more questions! i like helping out!
