accepted Emory students fall 2009

Published

I have just been accepted to the Emory BSN nursing program for fall 2009 and I just wanted to know if other accepted students would like us to communicate and help each other prepare for the fall. We can discuss anything from immunization, PDA, housing to financial aid.

I would also like current student and alumni to mentor us in order to make our preparation smoother. Any advice is welcome since you've been there before from what type of stethoscope to which brand of PDA to buy.

I am a very meticulous person and would like every thing to go perfectly that is why I need all the advice that I can get so that come August, we would all be ready and prepared for the challenging two years ahead of us.

Thanks to all who will join the group and to all who will advise us.

Really appreciated.

Oh and I didn't use a recorder and there were a variety of ones from digital to micro-cassette being used in my class.

Hey Jo_Jo!

How is everything going with your new job? Did you have to commit to a third year with NEAT because you decided to do a specialty? I'm so excited for you and I hope all is well!

Ok so I wrote out this huge reply and then accidentally deleted it all. Here I go again lol

I haven't started work yet...we (NEAT grads) all start on August 3rd. YAY!! I am enjoying my real summer vacation with my family. I am even starting to remember my kids' names.

I did not have to commit to a 3rd year with the area I am in. I remember reading somewhere about doing that for a specialty but honestly I don't see how that works. A job is a job. I am starting as a staff nurse in an ICU. All my colleagues are starting as staff nurses on their floors. For instance, if you choose L&D...you train in L&D and nothing else. That is your job. Any new grad nurse would have to train that way. Am I making any sense?

I am so excited for you!!! I remember what the summer before starting was like and by now you should be already freaking out about everything you have to get done by August that you found out about at the end of June/middle of July. Seems impossible. I know I just wanted to hide under my bed and let it all take care of itself. But it is going to be so exciting for you. It'll be overwhelming for a while but don't give up. It really does get better...on graduation day lol I have to say one of my favorite things was becoming a senior and seeing all the new juniors. You have so very much to look forward to...I am almost envious.

I will be around campus some I am sure so maybe we'll bump into each other. When you hear some of the instructors saying..."Oh no! Joanna's here!" you'll know I'm around.

Hey JoJo!

Wow!!! I think I'm more nervous now after reading your post. You are right about everything that needs to be done in a short period of time. I'm slacking because I haven't even ordered my uniforms yet. Do they take long to get them back to us, after we've ordered? Also, I'm still working on these dosage calculations. We have 31 days until orientation and I'm nervous and excited about what's to come.

Oh one more thing JoJo....

How long will your orientation be? Im a NEAT recipient as well and I would also like to work in the ICU. I read on the NEAT application that if you chose a specialty you would have to commit to a third year, but if you say that you don't have to, I believe you.

Thanks Joanna! I have one quick question for you. Did you work in the summer between your junior and senior year? Also why is the orientation 3 days? I was curious about the extra year with NEAT too.

Light don't even feel like your slacking. I have yet to order my books...well I just ordered the dosage calc book...no uniforms, no steth, no shoes. I did get all the medical stuff out of the way though.

Hey IGKUO!!!!

How is everything? I haven't pm'd you lately because I knew you were trying to finish up your last semester. How did it go? I know your glad it's over. The dosage calculations seem to be ok, but it's math we haven't seen in a while.

Did you get your CPR out the way yet? Are you as nervous as I am about this whole journey? I think I'll begin buying books and uniforms next week.

I still have one more final next week and then I'm done. They were both really easy classes but yes I'm glad its over. I'm taking CPR next Saturday...I think. I've been trying to get my little diva ready for first grade so once that's done I can work on getting what I need. I'm not nervous yet but I know I will be a big ole mess the last week of August! LOL!

LOL!!!! I know what you mean about getting the kids ready first. I have 5 that I'm trying to finish up school shopping for. My 2 pre-k babies can't wait to get started. We're gonna have to pay for my 3 year old, but he's going to school. I will be glad when they start school on the 3rd so that I can get a break!!

You have your hands full that's for sure! LOL!! I can't wait until school starts too! Last year I was crying...this year I'm counting down!!!

Does anyone know if we will need out uniforms right away or will we only be using them once we start on clinicals?

We will need them during skills labs, before we start clinicals.
