Hi All!
I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??
The student panels at the interview and at the info session mentioned that you are offered the contract at the beginning of your first semester. Granted, this contract does not guarantee employment in any way. They cannot guarantee any positions at Duke following graduation. However, it seemed that a lot of the recent new grads who wanted to stay at Duke were able to find positions.
GenevaMarie, I think it's gone up a bit in the past couple years. If I remember correctly, now it's more like $16,500/year for up to 3 years but, it's taxed at 38%.
It is contingent upon you securing a job at Duke after graduation. In past years, that was pretty easy and the majority of ABSN grads took advantage of this program. More recently, with the economy, it's been tougher but it seems like the grads who were really committed to it and were pro-active about finding jobs at Duke were able to be successful. Of course, if you're flexible about what kind of unit you're working in and what shift you're schedule for, that probably opens up more options. Who knows what it will be like by the time we graduate! Hopefully, things will improve by then.
Hey Ya'llOk one question. Is anyone not wearing a suit. I'm just not a full on suit girl. I was thinking dark grey slacks, white button down with pewter colored flats. I mean very classy just not a suit. You all think that is ok?
I'm wearing a suit only because i really don't have anything else dressy enough and would probably never weat is again so why waste the money on a one-time outfit.
I wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday for work (if not shorts or sweats) so I don't have much dressy stuff other than my suit.
When i go visit customers for my work, i usually wear khakis and a polo and that is not dressy enough for an interview.
What you are planning on wearing should be perfectly fine. If i had it, i would probably wear that instead of a suit.
Since it's been a while since i have worn it, I may need to try it on to make sure it still fits me - if not, i will be buying something different anyways tomorrow! :-)
Thanks Ladies. I think it will be fine. I want to look professional but comfortable too. For all you ladies coming in from out of State its going to be COLD, they are even talking about snow. Make sure to bring a warm jacket. Also if you are hanging out on Saturday the high is 27 and snowy so bring your Uggs!!
Suggestion for finding one another... why don't we put a SWIRL on the corner of our nametag??? If they made pre-made name tags for us.. I guess we'll just have to do it the old fashioned way- INTRODUCE OURSELVES. :)
Also- if anyone needs a ride to-from the Milennium, my mom has two more seats in her MomWagon. Let me know if you need to hitch- we're meeting in the lobby @ 7:45.
I say "YAY" for snow too!! Just remember that we rarely see snow, usually it's just ice. So, the whole area completely shuts down anytime there is any wintry precipitation. Road clearing is not our forte. (Although the last couple of times things were a little better.) They are calling for either several inches of snow or up to 1/2 inch of ice Friday night through Saturday. Unfortunately, Raleigh/Durham area seems to always be on the line so we never know if we'll fall on the snow side or the ice side of things.
Good Luck to everyone on their Duke Day though! Overall, it will be a fun weekend!
Edit: I almost forgot to wish you good luck with your phone interview today, sarabear!! I'm sure you'll do great!

One more question about the tuition reimbursement...
Does everyone qualify for that if they stay and work at Duke after? Or is it something you have to apply for and get accepted?
Doing the math, that money helps, but it sure won't wipe out your loans. But I'll take whatever helps!
