Hi All!
I have decided to take the plunge and leave my career as a mental health therapist to gain a BSN in Nursing and hopefully move straight into MSN program. Is anyone else applying to Duke in the Fall??
Congrats Brinkallz! So glad to hear it went well... I sure hope the rest of our girls ROCKED IT today, too!
You guys are gonna have such a great time next weekend! I'm a little jealous, but can't wait to hear what bat-signal you all decide to use! How about Carolina11's orange crocs? Hehe.
I did have a conversation with my interviewers about research vs spanish. They said the Nicaragua trip requires the spanish track. That's the only one that does though, so students that choose research can still do their 2-weeks internationally at any of the other sites if they want.
Interesting! I had seen that on their website, that they require conversational Spanish, but I didn't know you had to be in their Spanish track. I wouldn't call my spanish "conversational" quite yet but I know enough to get around in a Spanish-speaking country, plus I do want to go on to grad school afterwards, so I think I'm leaning towards research, but I definitely want to talk to the faculty about the decision.

It's not required, nor guaranteed; they're limited-access programs, from what I can tell from the website.
gm - here's an exerpt from their website under global and community health nursing. apparently about 50% of absn students choose to meet their 2 weeks of community health clinical requirements at one of the many international sites the program offers...
the opportunity for an international experience has been one of the highlights of the duke absn program....students have enthusiastically embraced this opportunity as fast as new options have been added for their clinical experiences. during the 2008-09 academic year 37 absn students, or 51 percent of the class of 2009 will meet their clinical requirements for community health nursing in either barbados, honduras, jamaica, nicaragua, or tanzania. students at sites in the caribbean and in nicaragua will be attached to public health centers or polyclinics for two weeks working side by side with public health nurses in a variety of clinics; and conducting home visits and inspecting public facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, in the community with public health nurses and environmental health officers, respectively. the group of absn students going to tanzania will be in-country for six weeks and will also complete their maternity practicum at marangu hospital in a village at the foot of mt. kilimanjaro. marangu lutheran hospital serves a catchment population of 200,000 people.
Wow, I didn't know there was a Spanish/research choice. Cool! I would choose research for sure. Right now I am helping in a research lab and I love it. Although nursing research is a lot different than making drugs. I am switching to nursing from being a Spanish teacher (I taught 1 year at a high school :) so if I get in to Duke, I will definitely tutor anyone who needs help :)
i had sooo much fun at the school today and i am confident that all of you who have yet to visit will love it! dont stress over the interviews--just be yourself and let your passion shine through. the interviewers will work with you for keeping the conversation going. and all of the students were super sweet so have fun making new friends! good luck to everyone and God bless!

Just wanted to let you guys know not to worry too much about your interview! It was pretty laid-back and our interviews were one-on-one with faculty members. No scary panel! Everyone was incredibly welcoming. I feel like I worried for nothing! The faculty members who interviewed me had not seen my statement, application, or recommendations...just fyi. Well, i'm off for sushi and Avatar at IMAX. I just wanted to stop by here first!
And congrats kebunt! Hopefully, we will all be joining you!
