ABC.com nurse's blog

Published

Have any of you seen this, it is from ABC.com's Grey's Anatomy site - http://www.seattlegracegossip.com/

It is a nurse's blog. The nurse seems to want to talk only about the love lives of the interns. She has no interest in anything else. To top things off, the title is "Debbie does Seattle Grace". A take on "Debbie Does Dallas", a Media movie. Nurses are educated professionals, not Media stars!!!

I know you can send letters to the producers of ER, Greys Anatomy etc through www.nursingadvocacy.org .. if anyone has the time please protest this with me. It makes me so mad!!

I doubt that most of America believes witches are keeping us safe, Kiefer is a real "G-Man", Tony really is going to die before the next season, ALL good doctors have the bedside manner of House, or that ALL nurses have an STD.

Oh, Tony is SO going to die. Or not.

Yes, but Anthony Jr. is primed to take over as the Don. I hope people don't believe that all Italians named Tony are Mafia.

Well, I don't watch any of these TV shows- I like to watch TV, but I usually just don't have the time. That being said, I did check out the blog, and it was like reading a teenager's diary of what was happening at her high school. It was just annoying.

However, I do understand where the OP is coming from. Especially with the first blog I read, the nurse is asking for her Scrabble game back (it's missing) because she plays during her "slow evening shifts." What??? Yeah, right. And the blog does focus on the doctors sex lives. (You know, as a nurse, I'm so busy I don't even get to have my own sex life, much less do I have the time to follow someone else's!)

I can only hope that anyone who may read this and think it's REMOTELY accurate will have some type of unexplained intervention and their TV spontaneously changes to the Discovery Channel's Trauma: Life in the ER (is that the right name?) or something like that.

;)

Peace, S

Its Just Her Opinion Can U Blame Her For That? Anyway When Doe Sthe Show Come On?lol

It is Trauma Life in the ER haha. I hear a lot of people complain that grey's anatomy is not medically acurate too. Once again all I have to say is it's a show! Watch Trauma if you want to know what it is really like. I watch just about every medical show possible except MASH and General Hospital fictional and non fictional.

The reason she was talking about the scrabble board is b/c one of the interns who is becoming "too close" with a patient was playing scrabble with him while she was working... You really have to watch the show and listen to the writer before you can bash it b/c they aren't trying to offend nurses.

Oh and the show comes on sunday nights at 10:00 EST. This epi is supposed to be awesome!

Gees, a nurse's blog talking about that stuff??? Why even say you're a nurse, if that's what you're discussing? I have to agree with the nay sayers here. I'm tired of nurses being portrayed as stupid bimbos who went into the profession to meet doctors. I'm tired of our job being portrayed as so unimportant. I have been a nurse for 20 years, and I have to say I have NEVER had a shift where I had time to play scrabble. You all really think it's funny that they portray the important issues to nursing as how to avoid STD from the docs you are supposed to have a professional relationship with? Those of you who say you don't care what the public thinks of your profession, I think have not been in the profession too long. After you've busted your ass catching subtle changes, acting on them, and demanding the doc do something about them, only to have your patient tell you in the end how great the doctor was & I need you to get me some juice honey,or one patient is screaming at you because you didn't bring his coffee too him in a timely manner even though you were coding the patient next door, then let's talk about our portrayal to the public . I'm not saying there is no humor in nursing. I think there is plenty of humor in nursing that the public would get a kick out of just as much as we do, and still gain a respect for WHAT WE REALLY DO. I think it would be wonderful if the lay person really knew what we were responsible for as far as their well being was concerned (ie.. drug calculations, critical assessments and critical thinking, choosing when to call the doc and which doc to call, Knowing when the doc is wrong, catching pneumo's, wedged swans, ealry chf, early occult hemmorhage, etc.). They should know we are concerned about evidenced based practice, nurse patient ratios & their safety....NOT who's dating whom.

I saw a really big thread recently about a nurse that was dating a doctor, and MANY people said it was no big deal.

Hospitals are no different than other work places they too have gossip.

But everything that you explained is why Nursing isn't a reality show. No one cares about all the important stuff that nurses do and it's sad. I would like to watch a nurse reality show. But then again, no reality show is really a reality show either.

You would have to watch the show to understand that the nurses aren't seen often in the show except for treating patients. In fact they TELL the interns what to do when there isn't an attending (anyone remember when Izzie had to crack a chest and she didn't know how all the attendings and residents were on the tumor surgery, the nurse walked her through the whole thing). There are 3 blogs, a nurse blog, a bartender blog, and a writers blog. They are people you don't see in the show but they can write about things that you missed. Like maybe a kiss or someone talking about someone etc. It's really to fill us in on what they couldn't fit into 1 hour of tv.

Wow, I can't believe how much this topic stirred everyone up. I have been a female in the military for almost 20 years and have seen many changes and taken a whole lot of **** too but for some reason movies or TV shows about military or military women portaryed in a negative or inaccurate way has never really made me upset. It's just entertainment and I know what I do everyday. Now I am starting my new nursing career and I think I feel or will feel the same way. I know what I do and I make sure I work hard and carry myself in a professional manner. I don't have time to worry about what others may think, and I know I can't waste time and energy getting angry about TV shows. I watch all kinds of TV shows and some are really dumb but they entertain me, they let me escape for awhile...I never sit and go hmmmm, I wonder if that's how female police officers are or wow, do all female lawyers behave like that?? It's usually the crazy story line I am following and not the acurate portrayal of the women in it. Basically, if I don't like a show, I change the channel. Iif I don't like a blog, I don't go there again.

I would like to add 2 things.

1. Most of the nurses on the show are real life nurses.

2. The nurses also went on strike during the show, and the hospital obviously didn't run as "smooth" without them. There is also a whole episode dedicated to why you shouldn't tick the nurses off.

Here are some clips from the show involving the nurses.

This one is the best one! You have to watch both! :lol2:

OK to reply to a few of you

#1 - I do NOT watch the show. I follow the center for nursing advocy's reviews of it and the previews I see on TV. SO telling me that if it bothers me to stop watching it, I already don't.

#2 - yes I hear they had a strike and the physicians had to do tasks like EMPTY BEDPANS, and CHART/PAPERWORK. Not the real jobs that nurses do. The actual nursing tasks that nurses do are already done regualrly on TV by physicians.

My mother in law was shocked to see that ina REAL hospital, "the nurses did all the work, I hardly saw teh doctor". UMMM, yah. That's because all of the physical nursing skils that we do every day are done by a "doctor" on TV. She watches all of those crap shows. I still have trouble explaining to her what I do every day. Because she thinks doctors are gods that do everything, are there at the bedside all day. NOPE - they just breeze in and out. It's the nurse that's there all day, taking care of the patient! Assessments, meds, procedures, monitoring - that is all what nurses do. Yet on TV all they do is frown, empty bedpans, tell visitors to leave, and have sex with residents.

and #3 yes I"m sure there are accurate nurse "blogs" out there. That's great. But unfortunately this one is named after a Media movie, and all the nurse does is talk about the sex lives of interns and residents, and discuss how she plays scrabble at work. And THIS is the "nurses' blog" that America is reading. It is unfortuate.

There may be a young person out ther -girl or guy - that has been considering a career in nursing. But when the general tone of the media is to belittle the profession of nursing, and praise the physicians, then that may hinder someone's career decision. They may not have a chance to see a real hospital, see what a nurse really does. It's a shame.

Thanks, I needed that giggle this morning :lol2:

To the OP, that "blog" isn't even *real*....it's just an extension of the show. I guess you have to watch the show to know that. I NEVER miss it...I think it's great entertainment....along with House.

Those of you who say you don't care what the public thinks of your profession, I think have not been in the profession too long.

No one has said that.
