AANP, FNP 2016 Exam

Updated:   Published

I have appreciated all previous posts on this matter ,and just wanted to reach out and ask if anyone has taken the 2016 version (or other other recent versions) of the AANP FNP exam (as most of the other posts are a bit outdated). I am looking for any type of advice on this exam (regarding prep work, or even day of/week of advice. I am currently scheduled to take the exam at the end of this month (in two weeks).

As for prep work thus part I have purchased and completed the Fitzgerald Review, Read Leik's most recent book and done the corresponding questions in the back of the book, and have taken the AANP FNP practice exam on their website, only scoring a 72% (66% is passing on this exam). This of course made me a little more anxious than I already was. After taking the practice exam, I've realized my weak areas and plan to spend some time on those in the next two weeks.

Any other words of advice on this matter, are definitely welcome! Thank you in advance!!

I'm so sorry you did not pass. I would study and read Leik book several times and take notes to quiz yourself on topics. For each illness, understand how to assess/recognize it, diagnostic exams or tests, treatment and the Plan or teaching. If you can break an illness/problem this way, you should be able to dissect the question being asked. Try to find the core question of what they are asking. Is the question asking assessment, testing, planning or treatment. Stick with this stratedgey so you don't get overwhelmed. Hope this helps. When you really understand the disease process and treatment , it will build your confidence in answering the question.

Thank you for your support. You mean when answer each question, stick the strategy as thinking first assessment, then testing, planning. Great, Thank you for the advises.

How about medications ? any strategy?

Thank you a million!

I took my AANP exam yesterday & sadly I failed. I guess it's so easy to read other people's comments about the test till when it is actually you testing for it. I will say I was stressed, anxious & it got the best out of me. I'm sad but not discouraged.

I finished school Nov,16 & was all over the place for say a month with trying to decide which review book to use. I previously used Fitzgerald, Boardvitals & Leik for my study. I got mostly HEENT & all those different rashes got me confused. I got home & replayed everything that happened in my head. I feel so tired, disappointed & numb. Today I plan on calling the AANP to see how I can get me 15 CE hours & also reapply to test.My friends told me to try ANCC but I feel that since I have seen how AANP test is, I feel I will be prepared the 2nd time around. My husband tried to make me relax by reminding me that I passed my NCLEX after 2 attempts. Maybe I'm the kind of "2nd time around" test taking person. But on a positive note, it is important to really know your symptoms, labs and 1st & 2nd line of antibiotics treatment. This time around, I will solely focus on Leik & maybe add Hollier review. I hope to retest again in April.

But God knows why I didn't make it because I thought I passed. Anyways we just have to keep encouraging each other and one day, it will be over.Remain blessed & keep studying, praying & pushing till we get that little piece of paper saying You passed! Good luck to us all.

So. I took and passed my AANP FNP test today. And since I visited this very thread to gather study tips (and encouragement), is only logical that I am back here with my two cents.

My impression of the exam: It wasn't the easiest (I mean, don't get me wrong, some questions were really easy), but it wasn't the hardest (you know, like I saw it in my mind). One thing is certain, you gotta study and study hard. The content was all there. If I am being honest, there were only about a handful of questions I had NO CLUE what they were about. I got a lot of elderly, a fair number of rashes. No developmental milestones in pediatrics. The pedi questions were pretty much like the ones in the practice test. Mom would bring their 2-month-old, 1 year old (whatever the age) sick with something and I had to figure out a diagnosis from the list.

As far as studying I used the Leik book (I swear by it). Some questions were wrongly answered in the back, but other than that I pretty much just used that book. I took a pick at Fitzgerald, but that was way too much info. I also had a Barckley review that one of my preceptors had given me, but it wasn't nearly as comprehensive and exam oriented as the Leik. I did not take a review course though. I was only interested in taking Leik's but her next webinar is scheduled for the end of the month, so nope. I bought 30 Exam edge tests and Leik's questions app. And purchased both FNP and AGNP tests from PSI. I took the FNP test after reading the Leik's book the 1st time and got 76% and then took AGNP few days before my test and got 88% (Some of the questions are the same). I took off from work and studied for 2 weeks' straight between 12 and 14 hours daily. Did I eat? Did I sleep? Was I a nervous wreck? barely, barely and YOU BET. I am not a great test taker; I get too inside my head. All I kept thinking right before the test was: Man, I can't possible go through this again so I better pass the first time L. Luckily I did. And YOU will be next. Best of luck guys!!! Hope this help.

Hi hoppel,

I passed my ANNP in February. I studied the Leik book several times , APEA book and CDs several times and too weeks before my exam, I did nothing more than questions. If you know your materials, you will have no problem. Also , I bought a tape recorder and taped my self reading and ask questions, then I played it over and over.Ask your self examples such as : If an elderly patient comes in with forgetfulness, weakness, tremors and tingling in extremities. What would you do to rule a DX of vitamin B12 deficiency. Talk to yourself. Good Luck!!

Congratulations everyone that pass and hugs & prayers for those that don't. Thanks for all the tips and advice. I am taking the AANP today. Super nervous and anxious. Trying to calm down, do my best and hope for the best.

Good luck ! I hope you pass. I can't seem to get it right. if you have any pointers please let me know. thanks [email protected]

Hi Horizon. I passed my AANP yesterday. I thought the test was hard and if I didn't pass it I wasn't surprised but at the same time there are questions that I'm pretty confident about too. I'm not sure if my method would help but these are what I did.

* read Maria Leik book.

* went to APEA review course

* Review the APEA review course book

* Do practice questions on Bank and APEA questions book

* Read Maria Leik book again ONLY on the areas that APEA did not go so in depth about

* Do practice questions on the PSI website

* Make a flash cards of something that I only have a hard time remembering and memorize them like STDs and treatment... I think I don't get to expose to these too much in clinical so I have a hard time remembering it and get it all mixed up. My weakness is women health and STDS

I think the key is recognize the disease or disorder, and know about it what work up what test would you do. what's the potential complication of that particular diseases so you can educate the patient what to do and what not to do.

If you have any particular area that you want me to go over with you let me know.

Congrats on passing, so happy for you pla84!!! Ive been doing all the things you have suggested and have no idea what i am doing wrong!!! Can't seem to pass the exam!!!! I've taken apea review twice already and online. doing questions, listening to the lectures, did the PSI and aanp practice exams. Don't know what to do anymore?!?!?! Any specific topics or questions that you remember that were on the exam? I know there are a ton of questions and 2 different versions of the exam. But maybe it will give an idea where to focus. Thanks
