Nearly everybody in our hospital has every 3rd weekends, but we have 40bed units, so it's a bit easier to staff that way.
We *do* have positions called "weekend incentive" positions where a person will work every weekend except 1 / quarter, they get an incentive where they don't have to work all weekend every weekend, but still get paid the same as others. It's nice for young parents to be home with the kids during the week while their s/o is at work, and then the s/o watches the kids on the weekends... As far as having 'weekday only' positions, though, we have them and they're called OR nurses
We don't have weekend options. Somehow it got put into the contract that if you work 2 weekends in a row they have to pay you overtime and you can't opt out. I understand that it's there to protect us, but for the love of pete... if someone wants to work only weekends for childcare purposes, there are those of us who would gladly give up our weekend differentials for them.
The nurses who snapped up the weekend pay plans know that if they stay in their current jobs, they are safe for now. The nurses took the weekend jobs and many have held on for years.
There is still a weekend differential for anyone else who works weekends. Regular staff does not need to work many weekends at all because the schedule is filled up with the weekend regulars and the per diems(who also love weekends).
a hospital where i work prn has just recently stopped the weekender program and all nurses are 12hr shifts. ****** alot of people off, so a hospital in the next county started offering weekender and 8hr shifts. guess what happened...a exodus to the weekender and 8hrs shift hospital. now my prn hospital is begging for nurses to work fulltime. serves them right.
Our hospital still has some weekender only positions, otherwise the rest of us have to work 5 weekend shifts in a 6 week period (fri/sat/or sundays).
They did get rid of the incentive program when there were shifts open that we would bid on. Use to get $10 extra per hour in addition to the hourly rate.
Ahhhhhhh....I do miss those shifts!

In the hospital where I work they will no longer post any week-end only or weekday only positions. As people leave a position everything is going back to every other weekend. Are you seeing this in your part of the country?
