A rash of firings...

Is this happening in anyone else's place of employment? Since the beginning of 2012 our 240 bed acute care hospital has fired at least a dozen nurses and a few PCTs (nursing assistants). Many of them have been over 50 years old and had worked there for many years. Those of us who remain don't have any info on reasons for these abrupt terminations. The nurses involved will usually be working as usual when they're suddenly pulled off the floor into the office and told to empty their lockers and be escorted out by security.

Needless to say those of us who remain have stress levels that are through the roof. Most if not all of the nurses terminated seemed to be "good" nurses. It seems odd that someone could perform acceptably for 30 years and then suddenly become incompetent...

Could this be because new Medicare reimbursement policies factor in patient satisfaction scores and young attractive nurses get higher ratings from patients? As an older nurse, naturally I'm worried.

I hear you, tokmom. There are three hospitals in our area owned by this group. Two are non-union and one is union. There's quite a difference, from what I gather. Obviously, you can see I'm working at a non-union one.

And the devious part of it, caliotter3, was that they threw in a couple of 20 somethings terminations, too. I think to defuse the possibility of age-discrimination suits.

unquestionably, it's appalling to what extend some facilities will go to save a couple of :twocents::twocents: bestowing upon their patients a non-experienced caliber of nursing care...just saying~

"soylent white is nurses! it's nurses!" =)

i didn't get the logan's run reference, though.

anyhoo.... at the ltc that i worked last year, my don went

nuts and fired a crap-ton of people, including myself. but

that was right around state survey time, and i think the stress

got to her or something. i have no idea why this would

be happening in your hospital, but it sounds horrible and

scary, for sure.

experienced nurses are much higher on the pay scale than new grads. just sayin'

I haven't noticed any age-discrimination at my facility. I am an older, very experienced nurse myself, and we are not union. However, I have noticed that the patient-satisfaction scores do seem to favor the younger nurses. We have several young, tall, thin and pretty nurses who make a lot of mistakes, but those are the ones the patients seem to like. The patients, of course, are not aware of the mistakes. We had one adorable young thing who "forgot" to start a dobutamine drip. (How do you just forget?) But when the older, not-as-pretty nurse comes in next shift and hangs it, the patient is completely unaware. That is just one example; I see a lot of mistakes with newer nurses, but management just says "they are just inexperienced." As long as the patients like them, that is all that matters! (We don't get any kind of retirement where I work, so that is not an issue.)

Well in my place we have seen this same senario. They have let go of several of our experienced staff saying it was one reason or another.. Policies that have NEVER been enforced before. In fact we have always been told that we shouldn't worry about this or that, then you get fired months later. GIVE ME A BREAK! And to point out how worried everyone is most of our long term staff is retiring left and right, some only providing a two week notice. Oh and we had better get our satisfaction scores us.. oh no we aren't replacing those people right now.. :banghead:

Terrific comment, PennyWise. We all float as well, and there is also a float pool. But some days we're still short staffed because of all the firings, and also all the people who left when the firings started. It was a sort of pre-emptive move: "I'm getting another job before you do this to me too." Now we're really hurting -- to the point where admin is denying people their vacation time this summer. You can imagine how THAT's improved morale.

Oh, sorry. "We all float down here" is a quote from my favorite book, Stephen King's "IT". That's my sig, appears in all my posts. Lol

We all float down here.

None of the choices apply to my hospital system. They are not firing the experienced older nurses per se, but demoting them or letting them go with a severence package. Lots of them.

Hah! "Logan's Run" is right. Or "Soylent White." "It's made of nurses!!" Oops, you may be too young to catch that geezer reference. :o

Well, really it would be more "Soylent Navy Blue" around here... Plus, if that was the case, wouldn't the young ones be tastier?

In all seriousness, I sense there have been more firings than "normal" where I am, but I am not convinced it is age-related. I will say that the longer someone had been employed, the more shocking it was to the other staff. However, the ones that I knew/worked with that suddenly "left" were not shocking to me... We've had a newbie or two let go as well, I assume for poor performamnce.

Ooooh...now there's a deviously clever variation on this theme, hey_suz. Nice.

I was told by a friend still in this organization that the NM is Not replacing any of the recent people who have left. 2 RNs left for Midwive positions, 2 RNs left to travel, and me. Oh and ALL on nightshift..

Logan's Run is a movie from the late 70's. Earth has been destroyed and everyone lives in a dome that has limited space. The whole idea is there are no more familys. Children are born in tubes. Sexuality is encouraged along with many partners. Love is discouraged. People are made to commit group suicide when they turn 30. Pretty interesting movie. (showing my age?)

I didn't get the Logan's Run reference, though.
