A nurse doubling as security?

Published

I grew up in a logging town, lots of drunks, and I could not count the number of fights I have broken up over the years.

I don't have any formal training, only the physical capacity.

Are there any hospitals that train security specifically for the medical setting?

Would I be recognized as both a nurse and security detail?

And more importantly, can I recieve a raise/bonus for having that distinction?

I may sound greedy, but that's life. And it seems to make sense to me. As a nurse I'd be in closer contact with the patients than the regular security, and would be able to work more quickly to prevent trouble.

No, don't know of any jobs like that. However, it would be handy if you work either in the Er or pysch.

Good hospitals specifically train their security (and train them a lot), because it's often a v. difficult, challenging role (other hospitals just hire people to wear a uniform and make security rounds, and don't really care). It's hard to imagine anyone being cross-trained to be both nurse and security officer -- you certainly couldn't work (at the same time) as both, because you could not, as an RN, be randomly called away from your assigned clients to respond to security concerns (also, security personnel are typically in police/military-type uniform that would not be practical for working as an RN). It would have to be (working as) one or the other on a particular day/shift. As for a bonus, I would guess that security officers make quite a bit less than RNs, so I doubt you would make any more money -- you would probably get paid less for the shifts you worked as security.

I've worked in psych all my career, and all staff members are expected to deal with difficult situations and respond to "codes" and altercations without receiving any extra pay for doing so. It's just considered part of the job.

You have every right to request the money and I hope you get it. I am 47 this month,as well as few months away from my nursing degree. I work in the ER and I have had to subdue many patients at work. I know for a fact that security gets paid big bucks since they state that (security) is the best kept secret in the hospital. So here's my point, I DO NOT get paid enough as a Tech., working 24 hours a week (so I can finish my nursing) that I can afford to get hurt at work by a psyc. patient, and collect some B.S. workers comp. money. Its NOT my Job to wrestle them, The funny thing was, yesterday, when we had another one in the ER, The security guy stated he had things to do. HMMMMMMMMMM???????? I hope you get the money.....and I think I will make it a point to speak up next time, Its what he's getting paid to do NOT ME! Thanks:cool: Randy

How old are you? Ever thing about getting your license and serving for army/navy/etc. as a nurse? Sounds like it could be right up your alley.

Psych floor would be perfect for you.
