A nurse called me a "little pretend nurse!"

Published

Ok, so i work as a PCT in a NJ hospital on a BUSY unit. I am currently 1/2 way thru LPN school and plan to bridge to my RN.

I had a nurse on my unit ask me why I want to be a "little pretend nurse" and why I didnt just go straight into RN school.

I constantly have nurses ask me "why" except the nurses on my unit who were LPNs and bridged to there RN.

It bothers me that she would say "little pretend nurse" I work VERY hard in school and LPN school isnt easy or for the FAINT of heart.

Also, I feel the clinical skills I am getting are way better and will help me succed as an RN one day.

Just venting! Lol

has anyone else had this issue?

I'm sorry she was so rude to you. I'm an RN and I constantly get "Congratulations on becoming an RN, but we were really hoping for MD" jokes. It's demeaning, but most of the time I feel the people saying those things don't realize how bratty they're being.

These are typically the same people who think telling you "you're too smart to be a nurse, you should be a doctor!" is a compliment.

Make no mistake! This remark is calculated and EXTREMELY unprofessional. The words "little" and "pretend" are meant to be disparaging and belittling. And this coming from a "Charge" Nurse!!

I wonder what, in her experience and career, makes her feel the need to treat a colleague this way. Cost, for starters, can be an issue. In Canada, RNs have to go to university for 4 years, and have their BScN. Our Registered Practical Nurses go to college for 2 years.

She is a shinning example of "what not to be".

You have chosen a fantastic career, hold your head up and be very proud!

I've heard "little pretend nurse", "let's play nurse", "low paid nurse" ... I'm sure there are many more. I've heard just about as many for RN/BSN. I hate to disagree with everyone out there, but grow a little thicker skin.

I doubt the nurse you were talking with realized how belittling the comment was to LPNs. She could have said " Your goal to be a RN is commendable, but why are you taking a place in an LPN school if that isn't what you want to do for a career? There are many who want to practice LPN nursing for a career but cannot get into the program- I think you would be better served making the choice to attent RN training before you waste the schools efforts in training you for a career you don't intend to practice." Even you (at least by your stated education plans) seem to see LPN nursing as not what you want to do for a career, so I can understand the question. I find your goal of seeking an LPN licence to pave the way to your real career goal of becoming an RN much more insulting to the practice of practical nursing than some silly word play.

Well, I took exactly the path you say is insulting.

And as result, I was able to work full time while going thru ADN and then BSN. End result? I graduated with NO debt or student loans. I took my school and work very seriously, and took pride in being a LPN! (for the entire 6 yrs it took to get ADN while working full time).

Going to LPN school is a great way to really get your feet wet, work in your area of interest, and earn a paycheck while continuing your education.

Referring to LPNs by ANY of those ridiculous, insulting names is pure obnoxiousness. Do you pay your LPN tuition with pretend money? Do you care for pretend patients? Do you have a pretend license? Do you pass pretend medications?

Please. Everyone on the healthcare team deserves to have their role, education, and experience respected.

I wouldn't trade my LPN experience for anything. I was a LPN for 7 years before becoming a RN. Now I have my BSN and will be beginning the MSN in the Fall.

The best of luck in your studies.

unquestionably, belittling someone is a sign of an individual's self low esteem. having said that, one has to remember the following quote whenever someone tries to use you as their stepping stone... "no one can make you feel inferior without your permission" eleanor roosevelt

By the time you finish the LPN and the RN you will have many more clinical hours to put down when applying for a job. Congradulations on being at the half way point! You are on your way to being a licenced NURSE!

I really really like this! Its short and to the point and it really makes a person think! Consider it stolen! Thanks!

I agree and will also be stealing it!

Thank you ALL for your opinons and praises. My charge nurse has an ADN & my Manager has an ADN as well. there are a few who work on my floor with a BSN.

I chose the path that was best for me, doing CNA & PCT then LPN then RN & BSN i feel gives me alot of experience and will help me relate to ALL staff members if one day I find myself as a charge nurse, educator or in management; because i will have done different positions. I hope one day ALL members of the healthcare team can be treated equal from CNAS to NP because we ALLLL have a job and rely on one another, at the end of the day we have the same goal -- THE PATIENT!

thats rude..a health team should respect each other not underestimate...its just YOUR way of doing/accomplishing NOONE elses..why should they care anyway...:argue:

Maybe she called you this for a reasona) You did something unprofessionalb) You did something inappropriatec) You did something outside the scope of your skill level.

Even if any of the above were true, "little pretend Nurse" was still highly inappropriate, ineffectual, and insulting. Most especially coming from a charge nurse or manager.

No actually she asked me what I was going to school for; and after my reply of LPN she said oh a little pretend nurse.

Hmmm...i think the unprofessional/innapropriate one was her!
