A lot

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, this is something that really bugs me. All of us are either nurses or working on it. Yet all of the time I see "alot" in the post here instead of "a lot". It's two words. With our education we should know this. But don't be fooled, I used to write it as "alot" too. :chuckle

My personal "favorite" is lose vs. loose... like when people write that they are trying to "loose" weight. I don't correct them - I get their meaning all the same - but I always get this horrible visual of loosened skin, cellulite, etc! Ew! I really want to lose, not loose, my weight.

When I was interested in volunteering at a hospital, the volunteer coordinator handed out sheets for us regarding "HIPPA policies". I waited until break and quietly pointed out the mistake to the coordinator - her face turned so many shades of red from embarrassment :imbar

I have to admit, though: I do get a little amused when I hear people ask for an "expresso" (did you want an espresso or fast coffee?), end statements with words like "vice-a versa" and "ek-cetera", write about how they "defanetly" want something, say they want to "ax" me something (eek!), and talk about distance as "lenth" instead of "length". It's not worth busting a vein over, of course. And I know I sound like a dork when I visit my friends up north and use words like "y'all" and say I'm "fixin'" to do something, so I can't complain. :chuckle

My mother-in-law has a few good ones. Instead of salsa, she pronounces it, sal-sa. It CRACKS me up when she asks for

"sal-sa sauce". I'm pretty sure, "salsa" means "sauce" in spanish to boot. Hehehehe....my other fave is that she says en-vel-op (no "e", therefore, no long "o"). These are the spices of life that keep it interesting. Don't ya think?

Gosh, I must have missed this one...being a big fan of the chocolate Godivas:chuckle .

Just from a point of curiosity, do the words mean the same thing - in some context - however remote??

I grew up in a household w/ an Eng. teacher (one parent) and same for a grandparent. We were charged $ (as kids) for improper grammer and/or word useage. While I never learned to diagram a sentence, I know what is correct - tho I don't always apply this to my online discussions.

The knowledge does come in handy, tho, for writing college papers and professional documents.

Still recommend the book in previous post - for all you guys (and y'all) that are tweeked by the use of the english language.

:selfbonk:

Which, that, who, whom...

Actually, I love regional accents. English is such a rich language because we all have different ways of talking. In Pittsburgh they say 'yin's guys" and 'warsh", my grandfather from NYC once told my father to "pawk the caw Mawk". I still laugh about that one. :p

I used to be an English major, so this type of spelling mistake usually bothers me - and when I see it in charting at work, it bothers me to no end. But on here, I'm guilty of quite a few spelling mistakes, typing errors, etc. On here, I try to say what I have to say, and often I'm typing very fast, trying to post before someone else jumps in!! So I kind of let it slide a lot of times. As long as everyone knows what I'm trying to say, or I understand them, "It don't bother me a hoot!" Can y'all tell I'm from the SOUTH?? Huh? Huh? Can ya??? :rotfl:

If I loose, or lose weight....I don't don't want it back!

That is just gross/grose! :chuckle

LMAO! I loved when my grandmother "learned" me something........btw she was a Nurse! hahahahahahahahaha

HA HA HA

You have one of my pet peeve grammar errors in your post. :chuckle

Look here:

But do understand the inability to spell has nothing to do with intelligence, or even facility with the English language. I worked with one of the most brilliant producers ever -- could write an eloquent script that was so mispelled you would think it was another language. That part of his brain just didn't work.

This is one of my pet peeves. I HATE seeing "alot". I also hate seeing "noone" There are more but I can't remember them right now but I know them when I see them, they set my teeth on edge.
