A little distressed, accused of stealing....

Published

Just woke up from nite shift, I work PRN at 3 different campus' within the "health system" in ICU. Went to one of my favorite units and get along with everyone, or so I thought. Well, when I called staffing to find out where I'll be sent tonite, I was asked if I took a floral arrangement from the break room this morning. It was more like a small houseplant. I did see it in the breakroom, but now I believe I have been accused of stealing it!

Apparently all of their "staff" was called and no-one has owned up to it!

I have never taken anything from the hospitals I worked for without asking.

There's always the "table" where everyone throws things on and it's up for grabs! Well, apparently they're assuming I took it, since I'm prn.

I know I'm not "staff" so I mind my own business, and don't touch anything that's not mine. I've been trying to avoid just this situation.

Now, I have to go back there tonite, and don't know how to handle this. I'm ready to lose my temper, I'm appalled and insulted by the accusation.

Not sure if I should say anything or not?

Anyone with any good suggestions?

Sounds like they asked everyone.

it sounds like they asked everyone; but i find it weird that they asked anyone at all-someone prolly wanted to take the plant themselves, and was ticked-off to find it gone, and made a big deal about it.

don't go in and blow-up or make a big deal about it-some people will read that as a gulity-defensive move. i wouldn't mention it unless someone brings it up, and then maybe joke like "yeah, i guess they should of put a lo-jack(or hugs tag) on it!" :rotfl:

Yeah ...like I'd risk a probably $40/hr job and my reputation for a darn plant!! that's laughable...I wouldn't blow up..no reason to..you've done nothing wrong.

Maybe it was a 'medicinal' plant? About 6 feet high? :chuckle Worth about 700.00 US?

LOL!

It was probably someone in housekeeping...

Specializes in Utilization Management.

A friend of mine in housekeeping--very devout Catholic, has a CNA cert but can't do the work because of physical limitations, and loved the patients too much to quit completely--went through a real nightmare in one nursing home she worked when someone accused her of stealing money out of a CNA's locker.

It started with an accusation--"the only one who was in the locker room between these hours was the housekeeper, so it had to be her"--which of course my friend denied. Over the period of a few weeks, the situation got so out of hand that she was snubbed, threatened, and she was getting crank phone calls.

The DON had to call a special meeting and address the issue to get the CNAs off her back because my friend was getting so frightened. I told her to quit the job and go to the cops with assault charges against the CNAs, but she refused because she just wanted to be able to continue to work and to get her name cleared.

Eventually, they caught the culprit red-handed by video camera. Turns out the thief was one of the CNAs who'd threatened to beat my friend up.

I only tell you this to demonstrate how things can escalate if it's not nipped in the bud quickly and publicly.

It's not just a plant; it's your good name that's on the line.

Elizzy, how do u think the permanent staff would have felt if they had been asked and you hadent. As long as everyone had been asked then that was the fairest way, dont even think about it. I think your insecure because you are not permanent and dont know whats being said on the shifts when your not there. I wouldent give it a second thought, you dident take it and thats the end of the matter.

Specializes in PeriOp, ICU, PICU, NICU.

No, do not lose your temper over a silly situation :nono:

I can honestly see where your feelings were hurt and all, but it seems like they questioned everyone. That is the correct thing to do. You know you did not take it, and without proof of you taking it, no one can "assume" or blame you for it. It could have been anyone.

I am sure it was misplaced or something. Even if it was stolen, I am sure they are not going to make such a huge deal over a plant.

Go to work and clear your mind of the situation.

I think that it must've been one of two people........

either the manager or the butler did it!!! :chuckle

Seriously, I am wondering what happened. Did it all get straightened out???

LOL, the butler must've done it, in the drawing room, with the candlestick!!!:coollook:

I am just wondering how someone managed to sneak a plant out of the facility. It isn't like they could just stick it in their pocket or their purse.
