A changing paradigm in nursing/healthcare?

Hi all. Would like to elicit some input on a changing paradigm that has occured (or is occurring) in nursing or healthcare for a paper I have to write for my theory class. An idea I had was the use of evidenced-based practice, which was shot down by my teacher because 4 other people were already going to write about it. Now I'm at a loss for ideas!

Some of my classmates are writing about:

1. Developement of the internet, which are making pts more informed/savvy about healthcare

2. Men in nursing

3. HiPPA

An emerging trend we're discussing in our ICU right now is family centered care. Other topics with lots in the litereature include nurse mentoring, family presence during resuscitation and open visitation. You might also look at the new nursing drama TV shows for their effects on the general public's perception of nursing.

How about the proliferation of all the different types of academic degrees that are now being offered ... all of the different routes for education and advancement ... all the different types of programs that provide an entry into practice, etc. It's a confusing mess. That could make a very interesting paper.

How about doing it on the nurse as in Independant Contractor, instead of always being an employee? I think nursing should be pushing for this, to allow more control over our profession. Have OUR OWN contracts with hospitals, to dictate OUR working conditions, pay, benefits? Practice Groups for nurses, like doctors do? Nurses in business? JMHO and my NY $0.02.

No doubt if there are two things that is changing nursing in this day and age on an international scale, is globalization and technology. Another interesting thing you can look at is interprofesional or multidisciplinary practice. If you are looking at issues with globalization,

you may consider public health pandemic preparedness (SARS and HINI is a testament to this),

you may also want to look at diversity within the health care setting. The diversity in thought process. Within diversity, you may consider diversity in terms of gender (more males in nursing), cultural diversity, religious diversity, as well now there is great diversity in what is considered evidence and what is considered evidenced based practice from the use of mid range theory in nursing, to critical theories, phenomenology etc.

Another thing you can consider and look at which is happening in many countries. Im not sure to what extent this is embrased in US, look at primary health care. The most recent issue of the World Health Report I believe is on primary health care and this will provide you with a international and global picture of the issues in nursing.

Advanced Practice Nursing, education, scope of practice etc. continues to be on the agenda of many countries.

Simulation is another one, when thinking about technology.

The list goes on and on.
