A&P without Bio and Chemistry????

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Has anyone taken the A&P course without having taken Bio or Chemistry???

I'm just speaking from experience. For example, UTA lists Anatomy and Physiology I & II as pre-requisites for its BSN nursing sequence but neglects to mention that biology is a pre-requisite. It also lists biology and one year of chemistry as pre-requisites for its microbiology class, and it doesn't mention that college algebra is a pre-requisite for both its introductory chemistry class and its statistics class. Its BSN brochure doesn't tell you that; I had to look up each and every class in its course catalog to figure out what those courses' pre-requisites were.

thanks for the info, it's something for me to investigate since I also think of applying to a BSN program. Luckily I have college algebra under my belt ;)

I took A&P I for kicks when I was 20 and an English major. I was surprised when I got an A. Since it has been 14 years, I had to take it again so that I could get on my CC's 5 year waiting list for the nursing program. Now that I'm on the waitlist, I am taking micro and chem at my leisure while I do all the BSN prereqs. My prof. recommended the book, Chemistry for Biology Majors, and I picked up a copy off ebay for $1. It was very helpful and I got another A this time around. I am sure that I will understand more when I get into real Chemistry. Just wanted to let you know that it is possible. :)

I took Physio before Anatomy, Chem and Micro together and I got A's in all four. I did have a basic bio class, the only stuff I recall being connected at all was from Micro...although you had to take the basic bio to take any other Bio's...

I took biology 20 years ago and remembered nothing, I took chemistry along with AP. we only covered one breaf chapter on chem what I learned in Chem was really not of any help or benifit to AP. I think its a good course to take as it involves alot of critticle thinking (atleast in my class). I did however take a basic AP no lab course last year as a pre req to a LVN course and I think that course helped me immensely with AP 101

I believe most schools require that you take Biology and Chemistry before A&P. I took chemistry and biology before A&P and it was useful. I was able to understand fluid and electrolyte balance better. It is important to take the courses in the right sequence. What may work for one, may not work for you. If I were you, I would talk to an advisor since it really does not matter what we say to you. What matters, is what your school wants you to do.

I would tend to agree with what has been posted so far on this topic. Except for the fact that I spoke with the nursing counselor at my college and his advice was a little different. I took chem in high school but I told him I didn't learn much as I was in homeschooling at that point with a VERY easy teacher. He said "don't tell anyone that, and go ahead and take anat/physio". So I imagine it depends on the student as well as the school. If you think you will do well without the bio and chem I say go for it (I am!) hopefully we'll both do well! Good luck!!
