Hi y'all! Anybody taking A&P 1 this coming spring semester? I'm trying to get as many pre-req's out of the way as possible and could use a study buddy or 2! Thanks! :)
Hey everybody, I just took A&P this last semester and I passed with an 87%. I am definetely not the brightest crayon in the box and I found it very worth while, I learned soooo much. My teacher said if you cannot dedicate 1 hour each day you don't belong in the class and he was right. Make sure you allow yourself apt time to study and you'll make it far.... PEACE....
well i am having difficulty in AP1..i study very hard at least two hrs per day...but my professor really flies thru the material...this is my first science course, and it seems like he believes that we already know some basic things...which i dont!! for example, he gave us a chart on the Krebs cycle...all i see is ATP, (i know what that is ) NADP, NADP+...blah, blah, blah...i honestly cannot make heads or tails of this...he told us to "look it up"...so basically he did not TEACH the material...but it is going to be on our first test next week!!! can anyone please explain it simply...once i have the basics i'm sure i can learn the rest from searching...
thank you!!!

Okay. Seeing as how I do not know what your professor is specificially wanting, because some professors want one thing while another just want the basics. But, I will give you what my professor wanted from us.
Stages of Cellular Respiration
First Phase-Glycolysis
Occurs in the cytoplasm, is the only anerobic phase (meaning no oxygen), produces 2 molecules of pyruvic acid and 4 ATP's but 2 ATP's are used up in this process.
Second Phase-Kreb's Cycle
Aerobic phase, occurs in the mitochondria (powerhouse of the cell), prduces the first bi-product (carbon dioxide), 2 ATP's, and electrons from hydrogen ions. The Kreb's cycle is a hydrogen carrier.
Third Phase-Electron Transport System
Aerobic phase, occurs in the mitochondria, produces 32 ATP and the second bi-product (water)
Also, remember that glucose and oxygen is going into the cell as carbon dioxide and water is going out of the cell. The mitochondria produces 34 of the 36 ATP within the cell. Also, we had to know that pyruvic acid turns into lactic acid and small amounts of glucose when oxygen is not present. Lactic acid also occurs mainly in the muscle.
I hope this helps!:wink2:
TNMommy - sincere thanks!!! but do you know what is the NADP etc? and Sunset, would you happen to know of any websites where i can visualize it? maybe that would help me...and thank you both for the response... i sincerely appreciate it...
Here are some different sites. My advice would be to look at all of them and see what you can learn from each one. Somewhere along the way, it is likely to all "come together" for you. :)
http://www.science.smith.edu/departments/Biology/Bio231/krebs.html (very nice animation, big overview, not very detailed)
http://incolor.inebraska.com/mcanaday/main.htm (also includes helpful information on the processes that must occur prior to the Krebs Cycle)
http://www.wiley.com/legacy/college/boyer/0470003790/animations/tca/tca.htm (very nice animation and explanations, more detailed)
http://www.sparknotes.com/biology/cellrespiration/citricacidcycle/summary.html (maybe more detail than you need; read this one last)
Hopefully, seeing it lots of times will help it all make sense! And don't be fooled by the fact the Krebs Cycle is sometimes called the Citric Acid Cycle! They are the same thing...
Best of luck. I'm sorry your teacher is making you learn this by yourself. I guess he/she assumes you already know it.

Actually we did not even go over any of that. I had to look it up on the internet to figure out what you were talking about. It sounds like it has to do with oxidation-reduction. I found some info on Wikipedia. I don't know. My professor just simplified everything for us. He figures life is complicated enough, why make A&P complicated too.
Hey,
It looks like you have some good links. I don't know what NADP is either. My book has NAD+ it is a high energy electron carrier. I tried to imagine it as something that goes around picking up the high energy electrons throughout the whole process to be used in the electron transport train to get the energy.
LoriS - thank you!! the first one is the most simple...from there i can build...but i needed the foundation...
everyone, thank you!!! yes my teacher makes this a bit difficult, for those who don't have science background...he doesn't realize how difficult it is....but my test is Thursday, and i'm going to continue to study, study, study...i will you guys know...thanks again!!!

I know exactly how you feel PBD :)
Hard work certainly does pay off and I keep staring at my A in shock LOL :)
