I'm currently taking A&P I, and it is not going well. My professor doesn't teach us. She told us the first day that she wasn't going to. For the first test, we had to do everything on our own, and I got a 67 (the class average). We have another test on Monday...for this one, she went over the notes for the most part, but still, most of what we've done is on our own. I'm really worried about not being able to get a C (the required grade for progression). What can I do? Lab isn't much better because it's so much material! For Thursday (our first practical), we have to know the skull, the axial skeleton, and about 20 tissues...college is great EXCEPT for A&P. And what sucks more is that this professor apparently used to be really good. It's just that this semester she's trying a "new method."
We must be in the same class!!!!!!! I just got a 66 (my classes average). I dont know how I am going to recover from that because each test in 10% of our grade!! I started going to another class (same class but different teacher) that is held before mine so I know the material. I cannot fail or else I will fall behind in the rest of my classes too!!! I am a good student but I dont know if I will pull a C in this class. Very worried!!!!
So the dean of nursing wasn't helpful at all.
She basically told me to suck it up and deal because the class is being run the way it's being run, and there's nothing I can do to change that. She told me that I need to be flexible in the way I learn and get help from people.
Needless to say, I'm am very unhappy.
Wow. Seriously of the DEAN of nursing told you that there is nothing she will do about your professor NOT teaching at all, I'd be looking to transfer, no matter what. Seriously, your in A&P I. That's the "easy" stuff compared to what comes later. If the dean doesn't care I just wonder how bad it's going to get for you when it gets into later stuff and you have professors that don't care.
What school is this can I ask?
Yup. She said that I need to adjust. That's not exactly something I can do. I mean really, the ONLY thing I haven't tried is individual tutoring, and I'm willing to try that, but the thing is, I don't learn unless I hear it! I told her this and she just said that there will be classes that aren't lecture based and I'll have to deal with those. I'm at Le Moyne College.
From everything I've read about NS, it seems that your expected to do and understand a lot of reading on your own. So maybe you should take this class and figure out a way to make it work, both for now and to prepare you for future classes?
Someone suggested recording yourself as you read your notes and then listening to that. Maybe that's worth the try!
Good luck!
iTunes U. Seriously. And the tutoring center. This is a test, even if the school doesn't intend it as one. Are you dyslexic? If you can get a dx of some sort, you can get some kind of IEP help; they're required to accommodate your needs, and if that means someone to read to you or another teacher lecturing, you may be able to get that. But it is college, and you are in charge of your education, and if this place isn't offering one, it's time to take your money elsewhere.
No I don't have dyslexia, or any type of learning disability.
I can't transfer either. This was the best school for me which is why I'm here. My chances at other schools are low because this is nursing we're talking about. Plus, other than this, I love my school, and am doing really well!
My approximate grades thus far, disregarding A&P:
English: A- (and the average for that class is a C+/B-)
History: A
Psych: A
Soc: B

I wanted to add that if you learn by listening then you should record yourself reading your notes and then play it back. Like others have said, it sucks that you have a terrible teacher but you are in charge of your education. Good luck with the dean. I hope the problem is resolved.
