A&P I is not going well

Published

I'm currently taking A&P I, and it is not going well. My professor doesn't teach us. She told us the first day that she wasn't going to. For the first test, we had to do everything on our own, and I got a 67 (the class average). We have another test on Monday...for this one, she went over the notes for the most part, but still, most of what we've done is on our own. I'm really worried about not being able to get a C (the required grade for progression). What can I do? Lab isn't much better because it's so much material! For Thursday (our first practical), we have to know the skull, the axial skeleton, and about 20 tissues...college is great EXCEPT for A&P. And what sucks more is that this professor apparently used to be really good. It's just that this semester she's trying a "new method."

I'm aware. And if I don't make it through A&P I, I will probably just give up on nursing, no joke.

Okay, what about anatomy and physiology don't you understand? Is it the memorization? The material? Google what you don't understand. Go through the book chapter by chapter and highlight the main points. Then google them. I know you don't like Anatomy arcade, but there are tons of other online resourses out there! Keep looking! We had many tests with low class averages, but that is the point- they are "weed-out classes". Do you want to be "weeded-out"? If not, do whatever you can to pass. Ask the dept. chair for more help-if you aren't getting it from the prof. You're going to have to put the extra work into it! Nursing school is going to be the same way- you'll have to teach yourself a lot of concepts!! Good luck! Kelli

If your not willing to do what it takes to get through this class, and it isn't going to be easy with a professor who isn't teaching, then your not going to make it through nursing school. If your going to give up nursing school if you don't do well in one class I have to wonder how bad you really want this. Your an adult, you shouldn't need to be spoon fed the information. I'm sorry but I have to agree with everyone else.

There are a bunch of different resources you can use if your willing to put in the time to find them. Just browsing on here yesterday I found stuff that I'm going to be putting to use because my professor is horrible.

It's not even the understanding, it's the memorizing...my prof expects us to memorize her notes, but then tests us on things that weren't even in the notes even though she says the tests are on the notes only. And it's not just teaching ourselves concepts, it's teaching ourselves the entire course!

Also, I'm doing what I can! I have a coloring book, I read the chapters, I do online stuff, and I go to BOTH study groups! Sorry if I can't do much better. I don't learn by reading. That's never been the way I've learned. I actually can't retain much information at all that way.

Don't be sorry for how you learn, there's nothing you can do about that. But you can find ways to get the information you need, in the way you need to learn it. And going to the dean is a good start. At minimum, you can express your frustration with her saying the tests are based on her notes, but then finding they're not.

Not much makes me more frustrated when a teacher expects me to teach myself, but when I come out the other end, it's pretty satisfying to know that I did it on my own. If the dean doesn't help your class, drop this one and take it online. You can transfer credits into this program, can't you?

I learn through repetition. For example, In a & p I, I would take notes while in class. I would go home and rewrite them (every class). I would then go over the powerpoint he utilized and add my own notes via google or whatever. A & P is ALL ALWAYS memorization! All teachers all stuff from the book/ppt and doesn't tell you it's going to be on the test! You have to know it inside and out!!! It will be tough, but If I can do it, you can too!! ( if you want it!) If you have any questions on the material, I might be able to help! Just ask anyone here, we may be able to help you understand!

Good luck!

PS, it's entirely possible there's something going on in her life that's affecting her ability to teach. Not that you can call her on it, but it may be that what you're seeing is an effect of personal issues. Not an excuse to be a crappy teacher, but it can give insight, if it's the case.

I dont have anything else to add about your instructor, because it seems everyone else has hit the nail on the head!

I do, however, have a suggestion about getting lectures online. I used to listen to/watch Marian Diamond on YouTube during my AnP 1 class. She is one smart cookie from UC Berkely, and I got more out of her lectures then I did out of my own instructor! You can search my topic also, and there is TONS of them to watch.

She apparently can teach...she's chosen not to this semester. She told us the first day of class that she wasn't going to teach.

What I don't fully understand if she actually said those words "I'm not going to teach you" why you didn't all leave class and walk straight to the dean right away. I would have. Instead you all let it get to this point where your all having trouble.

What exactly did she say? She had to have said more than just, "I'm not going to teach you" and that's it. What do you all do during the class period?

At my school there is a 1 week window where you can drop out or transfer to another class without penalty--if she had said that at my 1st class with her--I would have dropped her class immediately and either got in with the other A&P teacher or dropped it and went to another college to get my A&P credit and then just transferred the credit over to the NS college.

I always used that 1st week to size up an instructor--depending on when the deadlines were I could get in 2 or 3 classes with them and if I didn't like their teaching style--I left.

I did it with English and Chemistry--took the Chem at another college and transferred.

The English teacher I dumped was the speaker at our graduation and he was even worse at that--hard to imagine.

If you can get out of this class--even if it takes you going to the Dean and telling him the teacher is not lecturing--I would do it.
