A&P I is not going well

Published

I'm currently taking A&P I, and it is not going well. My professor doesn't teach us. She told us the first day that she wasn't going to. For the first test, we had to do everything on our own, and I got a 67 (the class average). We have another test on Monday...for this one, she went over the notes for the most part, but still, most of what we've done is on our own. I'm really worried about not being able to get a C (the required grade for progression). What can I do? Lab isn't much better because it's so much material! For Thursday (our first practical), we have to know the skull, the axial skeleton, and about 20 tissues...college is great EXCEPT for A&P. And what sucks more is that this professor apparently used to be really good. It's just that this semester she's trying a "new method."

It's fine that you prefer teaching yourself, but I am not one of the lucky ones who is able to do that.

And my prof refuses to answer most questions.

I will once again suggest recording yourself going over the notes and then playing it back. I know it sucks but it also sounds like you are making a lot of excuses.

Thank you!!! At first I was sympathetic to what he is going through but many of us have gave him plenty of ideas and it just seems as it's one excuse after another on why he can't learn the material. He's starting to remind me of a woman in my A&P class that is driving me up a wall on making excuses why she doesn't have time to study.

iTunes. Youtube. Record yourself reading the material. Tutoring center. Flashcards. Workbooks. If it's really that bad and the dean doesn't care at all, switch schools.

First off, I'm a GIRL.

Secondly, I'm not making excuses, I'm giving facts. I've tried study groups, study buddies, reading notes, flashcards, lectures...I'm looking into getting a tutor...and it's not like I'm shooting ideas down!

Specializes in student; help!.

True, you're not shooting them down, but you don't seem to be taking many of them too seriously, either. I think you should drop it and take it at another school, if you need lecture that badly. That or choose another major, since this seems to be such a stumbling block for you. You said you would give up on nursing if you couldn't make this work, so maybe this is your sign to move on. There IS a way to do this, but I don't get the feeling you're willing to do it. And that's okay, too. Maybe deep down you really don't want to go into nursing and you need a way out. If so, take it and be glad you got out with relatively little pain in the process.

Good luck, whatever you choose. And I totally knew you were a girl, fwiw. :chuckle

I've tried almost every one of the suggestions. You have no idea how hard I've been working to pass. My whole life depends on passing this class, so I'm gonna try whatever I can...it's just that I'm running out of options.

I'm sorry for some reason I thought you were a male. I'm not sure why, my mistake!

Not to sound mean but if you have tried almost all of our ideas INCLUDING the audio ones (itunes, reading your own notes, etc.) then a different teacher might not help either.

A different teacher would help...because I need explanation...and I would enjoy being taught what will be on the test!

I'm currently teaching myself Anatomy online. As other people have suggested, you can youtube various lectures.

Here are some lectures: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=JoseSantana123123&view=videos&start=40

Those are two really good lecturers..but there are many more. I have an A average in Anatomy right now and I have spent zero hours in class. I know this may not be attainable by everyone, but if you put a lot of effort into the class your grades will reflect that. I understand that you're upset with how the class is being taught but if you've exhausted all other options then you must find a way to make this work. Nurses should be resilient....problem solvers. Honestly, I don't think I'd want a nurse who could only function in one way.

If I were you, I would bust my @#$ to get an A...without the teachers' help. It is possible. I'm doing it.

Good luck..

You mentioned Blackboard. Is this a hybrid A and P course? Hybrid generally means that part of the class is online, and part is in the classroom. My A & P I class meets once a week for lab (for three hours) and tests, and the rest we do online. The department there is working on figuring out how to blend the online and classroom components of the AP class, but we certainly aren't suffering for it. We have those in our class who are averaging around a 67, and then others who are getting grades in the high 90's - without lecture. Surely all of the high-achieving students aren't just "learning by reading."

I know there are TONS of other things I can do besides reading the textbook. You might think a little bit about how much learning by reading you will have to do in your nursing courses. From what I've heard, the amount of content in those courses is so huge, that they can't possible lecture on every single tihng you are responsible for knowing.

I've never gotten an A in anything ever. I doubt it's possible in A&P. I'm already busting my butt, and I'm still failing.

No, the course isn't a hybrid. We use blackboard to see our grades and what is due when and such.
