A&P I: Fall '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club

Published

So, I'm in! I've got this and College algebra and I'm DONE with all my pre-reqs and related courses. I dropped this this past Spring, so I know how hard it is. Hopefully I'll have a better instructor this time that actually knows how to teach the class.

I am a pretty strong, motivated student yet I'm feeling frustrated with this class. I feel like part of it may be my instructor.. honestly I feel like I'm taking two totally different courses in one class.. one minute we're chopping up rats in lab and memorizing the directional terms, then we're in class taking notes on areas of the body and body cavities, 2 minutes later its all chemistry. I know we have to review this stuff and I had an A in bio last semester so I'm fairly comfortable with body chemistry and cell functions, but OMG.. it feels bizarre to me, like we're studying 2 different things at once. He mentioned yesterday that coming up we'll have 2 weeks to know 200 bones. I'm a little confused there, I thought there were 200 bones in just the foot? We must not be learning every little bone. Anyway, just venting here!

Hello everyone,

I am in my second week of A&P and I am already wanting to tear my hair out. I was in lab tonight and we were looking through the microscopes for the first time and I couldn't see any of the objects were were supposed to be looking at! Neither could my lab partners. The teacher was not very helpfull either. I was wondering if I am just dumb or if anyone else has encountered this sort of thing.

Thank you

Nichole

Nichole, A lot of people (including me) had trouble with viewing things in the microscope at first.. the way I finally "got it" was to follow the book directions precisely.. start with the scanning lens, locate the object BEFORE you move up to higher power lenses, play with the light to contrast. Find some open lab time and practice!! I finally had to bite the bullet and do that when I found out our lab test included focusing a slide for the instructor. Good luck.

Anyone know of a good way to memorize/learn the 6 structural Levels??

(Chemical, Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System & Organism)

Maybe it's just wishful thinking that there could be some cute way to memorise this!

I don't know of any cute ways to learn them, the easiest way for me is just looking at them as the building blocks of each other.. can't have an organ without tissue, can't have an organ SYSTEM without organs, etc. I like acronyms too but this one is probably pretty important for us to get the concept of how they 'make' each other, not just the order.

I love the system acronym posted here I am SO using that one :-)

It's actually not that hard to get them down if you just remember what is the smallest building block and move your way up. Each level combines to make the next level.

Chemicals combine to make cells, cells combine to make tissues, tissues combine to make organs, organs combine to make organisms.

Is anyone else attempting A&P without taking biology? And if so, how are you doing? I never took biology and am having a terrible time with A&P. I feel so disorganized. Is this doable?

Thanks

i took bio and chem adn im STILL having a tough time! Do you think it gets easier after these first few chapters of chem stuff?

I definitely think it's doable! I haven't taken bio for YEARS so I'm sure hoping so!! GL and happy studying!!

I never had a formal college biology class, as a matter of fact I didn't grow up in US. It is doable, lots of memorization. What I find helpful in my case is that I just completed the Chemistry classes...Intro and Organic/Bio. Things make a little bit more sense to me in A&P because of it. I also never had any Chemistry before I took those two courses....it's hard but doable. Hang in there and study, study, study!!!!!

I have never taken a college biology class and am doing A&P I. I think it's very do-able, just time consuming. If you are willing to put the time and effort into learning the material, then you can do it. I find that I just have to study a lot more than many people in the class - I write tons of notes, do lots of highlighting, and go over things multiple times. It takes several times for some things to stick in my brain, but it is getting easier and I'm not even one full week into the class yet. Hang in there, you can make it - just be prepared to study like mad and, whatever you do, don't get behind. :)

Thanks so much everyone. That makes me feel much better. My school is also offering a study group in the learning/resource center to all A&P students, so I will definately go to it as well. Hopefully they can give me some study tips.

Has anyone else attended the study groups that the school offers? Can you tell me if they helped.

Thanks

I started a new thread on the Pre-Nursing Board called

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***

I was thinking if we started a new thread every month it might be easier to navigate. So check it out and get asking those questions and sharing your experiences! Thanks!

Ok so i took my first test last thursday on chapters 1-4 the class average was 54.81 I made a 58:crying2: . My instructor said that I still have a chance to get an A in the class .
