A&P 1 Fall '06 Club!

Published

Just wanted to start a "club" for those of us who are taking A&P 1 this fall.

My class is 16 weeks. I have lecture on M/W/F for one hour each day and lab on Tues for 3 hrs.

My teacher for lecture & lab (same person) is awesome! She gives us a weekly quiz, drops the lowest one. Gives us extra credit. Four major tests. Final is comprehensive. (Ick)

She gave us handouts for chapter 1 and we just fill in what we want as she pretty much has everything she wants in these handouts. She told us we don't have to bring our big, heavy book to class - she'd tell us page numbers of tables, pictures she wanted us to know. As a matter of fact - she said we don't have to use the book that was sold to us for this semester. She said we could use any book like Saladin, etc., and make copies if any diagram, table is different. Pretty nice there.

Okie dokie - who else?

I just got back my grade for my first "BIG" lecture exam and i got an 86. I could have done better as i missed two questions for stupid reading mistakes. But at least we get to throw out one of our lecture exam grades so i'm hoping that i can throw this one out. I've done well on all of the quizes so far. however i do have a quiz tomorrow on protien synthasis and tissues. So i will be spending tonight the same way i spend every night these days.....studying. Lab is really fun though. I need to find some good pictures of tissues because i want to make flash cards to study for the lab practical.

Next monday in lab we are going to start learning the bones. That should be interesting. We are responcible for every bone, muscle, and nerve in the human body this semester. It's enough to make me run and hide. But at least i know that this information will come in handy. Far more handy then diagraming a sentence and other thing i've had to do for pre-req classes. Haha.

My professor is having us use the KU medical library's tissue slides:

http://www.kumc.edu/instruction/medicine/anatomy/histoweb

It's got a couple examples of each type. I already glued them to flashcards. It's been a while since I got to cut and paste!

As an LPN already, I thought I was prepared for the first lecture exam. WOW was I mistaken...I scored a 67.50!!! It kicked my ---! I'm so embarrassed. This test was harder than the NCLEX-PN. NO lie. Too many essay style questions. It doesn't help that the exam was over chemistry, cells, mitosis, DNA, and different tissue types and functions. This isn't the most interesting topics...hopefully the lab exam will go better for me. Ya'll say a prayer for me okay.

Took a lab quiz last night. Arg...I would have gotten 12 out of 10 but I put "pseudostratified epithelial" instead of "pseudostratified columnar epithelial." What was I thinking? ;) I did get all the foramen on the skull right! Yay! I found a good way to remember them.

We have our lab practical over everything so far on Wed. I'm actually excited. I can't wait to take it!

Please share your way to remember the foramen! I am freaked about the skeletal test!

I live in California and its like that here too I am pretty much shooting for a 4.0 the school I go to does not have a waitlist they take the highest GPA there is not testing no interviews just straight forward gpa so in order to get in you pretty much have to have a 4.0.

AP is a lot of work we have been in class for little over 7 weeks now, I really enjoy the work though I am finding it all very interesting and atleast this pertains to nursing, my previous classes didn't seem to make as clear a connection.

Check out all the extra websites given, make tons of flash cards and if you can find some friends to study with and bounce ideas off of each other

good luck

Hi Catzy5,

That's alot of pressure; knowing you have to make a straight 4.0-it's tough! Here in Alaska they factor in pre-req's and the nurse entrance exam score with GPA, so that does help some. I wish you luck in getting accepted, and with AP1 and 2. Do you have a good intructor? That makes all the difference, I think.

I've been looking through the posts to find all the links to AP websites. I'm putting them in my favorites for the semester 'cause I have a feeling they'll be my best friends LOL.

I agree that it is a relief to be learning stuff that pertain more to nursing. I'm curious though, about how much of this we'll really use. I can hardly wait to get into the actual nursing classes. For me, that's when all of this effort will pay off, I'll just feel more like I'm getting somewhere :wink2:

what do you all have to dissect this semester? We have a frog, cow eyeball, and sheep brains. I've never had to dissect anything, ever. 'Ought to be interesting. I have aquarium frogs and really like 'em so I could do without the whole frog thing. lol

The foramen magnum that is? The BIG hole in the base of your skull?

Think of Clint Eastwook with his 44 Magnum....blowing a Big hole in somebodies head

ya ita a lot of pressure they don't have testing at my school which actually I don't mind as I am not sure how I would do. They do have a 20% lottery spot so out of the 12 accepted 2 will be a random lottery and the other 10 gpa.

I have a great instructor for AP I am really happy with the whole class. We have our histolagy practical this weekend and I am actually excited about it. I was really nervous at the beginning of the semester when we started it thought i would never learn all the tissues but I just finished my review and I did really well. We are doing skeleton now too started about 2 weeks ago so far so good alot to know but all so interesting, I love staying after class and going thru everything with only a few people around the lab is open to us all the time.

We are dissecting A Cat this year its our last big project we start it in I think 2 weeks and its due at the end of the semester we will be using the Cat I believe for muscles. We I hear tell are also going to do the eye ball to me that will be the worst I hate eyes lol. We also are fortunate we have a Cadavar and can use him anytime.

Yeah, the big foramen is easy, I mean the little ones.

I think of "Lock Jaw" or "LOCJ."

foramen Lacerum

foramen Ovale

Carotid canal

Jugular foramen

Here's a pic with the holes labeled:

oh cool thanks I'll check that out. We are doing skeletal now too.

I remember the foremans by their names Jugular foreman are the wholes by the jugular, carotid by the carotid artery. etc... We have sheets to study by she has us take the skeletons out and study where the bones etc are, she is there if we need help but we are meant to find them on our own, figuring out hands on and writing down "land Marks" helps us remember. I try to do it all systematically. Also she has a great series of videos one of the instructors did walking you thru the whole skeletonl.

well i just joined, hello all! im taking A&P as one of my 5 classes this semester, and let me tell you! its kicking me! thank goodness we just started bones. all that cell and chem talk wasnt the greatest. :/ anyway, just wanted to say hi!

Smattles, Wow! You mean to tell me that your instructor didn't give you credit for that? I mean, how many pseudostratified epithelial are there? Like, ONE! I like my instructors because they let us "argue" about things if we have a valid point. It sounds like you got an excellent score anyway, so you probably arent worried about it. :) Good job!
