A & P Class requirement

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

The College (FTCC) that I am planning on getting my LPN diploma thru doesn't require A&P I and II, they only require Basic A & P. I plan on getting my LPN and as soon as I can get my RN. I am not quite sure how going from LPN to RN works in my area (Fayetteville, NC) or if it is even possible, but I am wondering if I should just go ahead and do the A & P I and II or just do what the school requires or does it even make a difference when its time to bridge from LPN to RN? I noticed another college I was looking at for my diploma does require I & II. I thought it was kind of odd that science requirements were different like that. Whatever I need to do, I want to start this fall if possible so I wanted to see what information I could get from here.

Thanks in advance

I have always thought it was kind of weird also. My LPN program through a CC made us do almost all the same pre-reqs as the RN program so that was helpful when I was ready to bridge to RN. If your school will accept the college level A&P 1 and 2 for your LPN requirements I would do it and get it out of the way now because I can't imagine there is a RN bridge program that won't require them. Hopefully if I'm wrong someone will write in. Good luck.

I would suggest doing the A+P 1 and 2 now, it would really stink having to go back and take those before you could bridge over.

I figured it would be best to take A &P I and II, it certainly couldn't hurt. I can't imagine the school not accepting those classes in leau of the basic, but we will see.

hi there,

I graduated from FTCC's LPN program and you are correct, they do not require Bio 168 or 169. I believe Bio 163 is what they take. If you plan on going on for your RN, take the higher up Bio classes.

You should really try to take as many pre-reqs that you can just to get them out of the way, besides that they give you competetive points to try to get into the ADN program.

The other thing is you will have all those classes out of the way and you will only be taking nursing courses.

I am just hoping that FTCC will take the 168 and 169 instead of the 163, just waiting to hear back from them. I will definitely have all my pre-reqs out of the way, I don't to have to focus on anything but nursing classes. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

I would imagine they would accept the 168 and 169, it is a higher bio class than the 163. I wish I would have known that when ever I graduated from FTCC years ago. I would have definetly taken 168 and 169. my program asked for 163 years ago.

I should have checked into the programs a little better. I feel they should definetly ask if you intend obtain and Associate Degree in one of their health programs, take the higher A&P, psych, Eng, Chem,Micro, and any classes that will help you with the program you wish to get into.

I found it upsetting because I had been told I had taken all the Eng classes I needed and I went back and another counselor said I had to take another Eng class. I should have done my homework a little better.

Remember this, people overlook the LPN program, because they see it as a waste of time or beneath them because they want their associate degree in nursing as soon as possible. I saw it as a stepping stone toward the ADN program. You can complete this program in a year, start working and earning a decent living while you go on to pursue your RN. FTCC also has a bridging program where you can test into the 2nd year of the ADN program.

Do you start your LPN classes in august?

I would be careful of the dates you take the more advanced class in relation to when you will be taking your RN classes. Some RN schools are sticklers about how recently your science classes were taken. Some schools will require students to repeat science classes that are only 5 years old since they were taken! So, I would check on that as well before taking the advanced A&P.

I had to repeat my A&P when I went back for my BSN because my A&P for my ADN had been taken 10 years before. The school had a 10-year rule on sciences.

I am starting my pre-reqs in Aug and will apply in Jan. I want to start nursing school with nothing but nursing classes since I still have to work part time and have a husband and 4 kids to take care of. I have to say though I am wondering how any works and does the RN bridge. I looked at FTCC's schedule for the RN classes for the 1st semester of the 2nd year and the classes begin either in the morning or at 3:00 in the afternoon and the clinic days are all day. One of the main reasons I am doing the LPN first is so I can work while I get my RN, but is it really possible with such conflicting schedules?

I think it is 5 years at my college too. I hadn't planned on taking more then the 5 years to bridge, but you never know. I definitely would not want to take any science class over again, so I will definitely keep that in the back of my mind as I make these decisions. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.
