Hi all! I am looking into for my MSN. I was wondering if anyone who has completed the program could help me out with some of my questions! Please let me know if you are in the program or have completed the program!

Western Governors University is an expensive proprietary college. It is not accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. This fairly new program focuses on competencies rather than grades. In other words there is no difference between an A and a D students. I would recommend attending a tried and tested Florida colleges that is accredited by the Southern Association of College and Universities. is geared to students who want a fast food education. I seriously question the quality of this institution. Many employers do not accept degrees from proprietary school. The retention rate of students is also very high for this institution.

Huh? First I do not live in Florida, is there a particular school in Florida that you could recommend? I am also looking for an RN-MSN program online. I like the idea of competency based and several of the people I work with went there so my employer seems to be ok with the degree.

Can you explain more about accreditation? I thought CCNE was all that you need?

WGU is not expensive compared to some programs. Believe that someone is confusing this program with other proprietary programs.

very interesting that you consider $6,000 a year as "expensive." i have my adn and bsn from two state schools, and with tuition hikes by the legislature here in texas, is now cheaper than my tax supported alma maters.

additionally, the "competency" remark is also unfounded. wgu is very explicit that their competencies are equivalent to a "b" grade, so someone who has a wgu degree has the equilalent of a 3.0 or higher. a "c" student would pass any undergraduate university in america - they wouldn't pass wgu.

whoever wrote this reply also doesn't understand that the "southern association of colleges and **schools** (the replier got that wrong)" doesn't accredit schools in every state ... only schools in most of the south. wgu gets its accreditation from the same regional accrediting body that accredits every university in wgu's home state of utah, the northwest accreditation commission.

the poster is also incorrect in calling it a proprietary school. wgu is a non-profit university, not a for-profit corporation.

i think this replier is confusing wgu with uop, devry, etc. those other schools are mostly interested in profit ... wgu is interested in innovation in higher education. check it out before blasting it without the facts.

I used for my BSN, after starting my BSN with two other colleges. Both of the other colleges were more expensive, and slow !! It would have taken me three times as long and cost me three times as much money. I finished my BSN in FIVE months. Now I feel much more economically safe knowing I have the BSN after my name and no student loans to pay off.

Ignore Deweystanford! What he/she wrote is completely inaccurate! I also don't know what they mean by "proprietary" college, but is non-profit, and is fully accredited by the CCNE. It's based out of Utah.

You should really make sure you have your information correct before you "advise" another person. Every piece of information you shared is completely wrong. is not only accredited and a non-profit university, it has won SEVERAL awards for its innovative approach to education. Assuming your post was made out of ignorance (because 99% of online only schools are exactly like what you described), it is easy to jump to the conclusions you made if you don't look further into the university and its history of why and how it was founded -- it does sound "too good to be true" and because of that it does attract skepticism, but even a small amount of research will show that it is in fact a real school with reputation and accreditation. Other posters on here have even commented about going on to NP programs once finishing BSN or MSN programs at WGU.
