Weed-smoking roommate

Ok, so summer is coming up and I know this means that local agency work in south Florida will soon dry up. So, once again I'm getting ready to do a travel assignment outside the state. I've decided to try finding my own apartment and taking the housing stipend instead of taking the company housing because I could save a lot of money this way. BUT, then there's the hassle of doing a short-term lease for a furnished apartment, paying a hefty deposit, and hooking up utilities, etc. So, after reading a few posts on here about the option of renting a room I decided to look into this.

I've been looking at ads on Craigslist and some of the roommate situations I found there seem interesting. However, I'm kinda nervous about moving in with a total stranger that I meet on a website. One prospect I was talking to sounded great and I was going to sign a lease with him... until he mentioned that he's looking for somebody who's '420-friendly'. I didn't know what that means so I had to ask. He told me that he smokes weed regularly, but that he only does it outside the house. The place is an awesome set-up and the rent is pretty good. But the weed-smoking is a deal-breaker. Even though I'm not smoking it myself, if I inhale the passive smoke and if there's a spot drug test at the hospital, its going to show up. Worse still, if the place gets busted the cops probably won't believe that I'm not somehow involved myself. And if that happens, I might as well say goodbye to my license.

Now, I'm back to thinking that maybe the roommate thing isn't such a great idea. Was wondering if anyone who has done it successfully could give me some pointers.

First, if the weed smoker is another traveler, with the amount we get screened, they will eventially get caught.

Second, NurseGuy, I would worry more about "Toker Ace" getting stung in a drug bust. And you going down for it, because you room in his digs. That can truly wreck an assignment, not to mention your license and your career.

"Sorry, I can't come to work...I'm in jail/court".

And someon being so open about, might not be discreet enough not to get busted.

I went back to read the op and didn't see where this person is a nurse. Just a guy with a room to rent and a weed habit.

I wouldn't do it. Too much risk. He can't be the only person with a good deal.

Yikes! I'm not upset, at all. And I wasn't calling you bitter, I was saying you were NOT bitter like I am. (I'm not sure I'm bitter either, I was just being goofy!);)

nurse i worked with was required to take a test d/t a c/o by a another nurse

she had to go to a neural occupational therapy office for the tes, not sure if it was urine or blood draw and when she got the results back she was told that the results were inconclusive..tht they weren't able to determine if she had smoked several days previously or if she had been exposed to second hand pot

her license was secure but the facility let her go anyway

I gathered too that this was someone with a room to rent, not necessarily a nurse. However, I wouldn't want to live there - afraid of getting busted too.

Danissa - I see you are in Scotland - perhaps the laws are different there. In the US, you can go to jail for smoking pot, let alone growing it.

:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: STEPH...dont worry about your boy ....Scotland and Ireland are wonderful places to be..he will get so much from the time here!

My post about my wee bro is just as it says..its about how I dont agree with what he does, but live with it..he is a sucessful man, but as my baby brother, I will always worry what he puts into his body and mind. BUT...not everyone on these wee islands does or condones this, although like other places all around the globe, if you seek...you will find!

btw..it IS illegal, but i felt comfortable enough here, on this site to share my views and worries!

A person who smokkes weed has issues, no matter how well adjusted they may seem. Let's all remember it does kill brain cells. Losing brain = NOT GOOD! Most people smoke weed do it to momentarily escape reality, and I wouldn't want to live with someone in a "stupid state" all of the time. My DF's cousin is actually a daily smoker, and about two weeks ago went nuts. I mean, walking down the street nude, jacking himself off in front of random women, NUTS!!!... They had to tie him up, carry him inside like a child, and lock him up for two days. And this was a person who had a really likeable personality, and seemed to have life all together. So stay away from weed smokers.

I should have added something to that. Stay away from them if they mean nothing to you, and if they do mean something try to get them to stop.

Wow.... what a huge amount of misinformation out there! To start with my credentials: I worked with mental health clients for over 15 years including substance abusers so I have a great deal of training and experience with this issue. For starters people who socially use marijuana are no more impaired when they stop using that people who drink. Any of you gone to work after staying up late drinking? well you were most likely more impaired than someone who smoked a joint. Secondly it has been conclusively proven that marijuana does not kill brain cells, (alcohol does), nor does it have any long term impact on any part of the memory. Second hand smoke is extremely unlikely to make you test positive on a drug test even if you were in the room with the person smoking. Even in nursing school one of the questions asked was "is marijuana a gateway drug" well my psychiatric nursing text, my professor and my own professional experience all agreed that this was a fallacy as well. Marijuana or THC has much less impact on the body than alcohol. So if you all want to jump on the bandwagon about "reefer madness" then you need to study some history and realize that the only reason that marijuana was made illegal was because of hurst publishing which had a stake in a new material coming out called polyester. Well hemp was also being harvested at this time and another person involved in making money off polyester happened to be the attorney general. Well Hurst owned all the newspapers and started the misinformation campaign to get hemp and all of its byproducts made illegal. So brush up on your history, brush up on your facts. the fact that marijuana is illegal and alcohol is not is one of the largest hypocritical standards in this country. Just a sidenote but i don't use marijuana but I do know plenty of people who do that hold full time jobs and function as normally as anyone else I know. As far as the other little items, marijuana is also not addictive, like cigarettes and alcohol which both are legal.

As far as saying everyone who smokes marijuana has issues. Do you know everyone who smokes marijuana. Actually I've come to realize that everyone has issues. As far as your relative walking down the street naked, I doubt it was just marijuana he was using, as a matter of fact i would guarantee it. Someone who would do that clearly has other things going on or was abusing another substance. Sorry, managed a psychiatric assessment center and that story wouldn't be bought by any mental health professional at my facility.

Its not that i advocate the use of marijuana, I advocate intelligent informed opinions rather than urban legends and misinformation. I also advocate personal freedom and the lack of government intrusion into our personal lives.

So my final question would be, someone who smokes a little weed at 9:pm for insomnia who is sleeping by 11 and sleeps well through the night, and someone who is up all night unable to sleep and only gets one hour sleep. Who would you rather have at your bedside. these issues are complicated and not solved by one liners like "everyone who smokes weed has issues".
