Does anyone work as a part time school nurse? Or are you the full time school nurse who has a part time school nurse on your staff?

Ive applied to a few part time jobs and they seem to want to just pay me the sub per diem rate and it kind of makes me feel a little like they are taking advantage of me. Who knows, though. I could be wrong. What are part time school nurses paid where you are?

I am full time and don't work with a nurse part-time, but do know a few school nurses that work part-time, often a 3 days a week or something like 9-1 five days a week. Those nurses are usually paid hourly or salary, with adjustment for their part-time status (i.e. 0.6 FTE position).

I work PT. My hours are M-F 8-1:30 (Our school hours are 7:45-4). I am salaried and am a .75 FTE I think. I stil get all the same benefits in terms of my paid days off when school is closed, etc. The only difference is that when I request PTO for a day off, most staff work 10 hour days, so I have to request a "full 10 hours" vs. 5.5 hours, otherwise I would be getting twice as many days off as regular FT staff. Confusing, but it all works out. I am hoping the budget allows me to increase my hours for next year. I would like to work 8-2:30 next year.

I work for a community hospital that contracts with school districts in the area. I'm per diem but I make union scale wages. It's flexible and fascinating.

What is your ultimate goal? to be a full time school nurse? Do you have peds experience? (I didn't have any, save being a mother of three) Another place to look could be with Head Start. Not all Head Starts put their jobs here, Employment Opportunities | ECLKC but another part of the same website has a program locator that you can use to find programs near you and see what openings they have.

The pay isn't great but you will learn a lot. I worked at one for 2.5 years and only quit because the CAP that ran it was poorly managed and I couldn't cope anymore.

I also work for a hospital staffed school health department. We serve dozens of disctrics, and only a handful contract for full school day staffing. Most of us (LPNs, RNs, MAs) work 5 hour days. The pay rate is competitive with the hospital's pay rate. I can't speak to what the RNs earn, but I started at just over entry level pay for my area. Took a pay cut from what I earned in the doctor office to have the schedule. (More time with my family, more time for school, realistic opportunity to go to nursing school).

I am full-time and I am the only nurse for all 4 of our schools. I can only dream of hiring a part-time nurse.

A few years back I worked half time. I received half salary and could have lurched health insurance at half cost if I had needed it. I was 5 mornings per week. Can't remember the exact hours. Needed afternoon coverage, they would pay me hourly sub pay. It was not perfect, but it was a nice job.

We don't have any real "part time" employees, but we have ful time nurses that split their time between buildings.
