I am still new but I feel like I'm pretty good at screening out my fakers. I've had a little boy be sent to me every day this week for a sore foot. He was playing around at home and fell down the stairs. Normal ROM, no swelling, and most importantly I saw this little one doing jump rope in PE without ANY signs of pain. I spoke to his mom the first day and she was asked if I thought she should get checked out and I said no (because of the reasons above).

Guess who just came into my room escorted by her teacher who announced "Let's show the nurse what we have on our foot!" He has a boot on and supposedly has "multiple broken bones" per the teacher. I still haven't received any paperwork but I now feel a awful for missing it.

oooh - i like it- i think my handbook needs a review! (again, not that the parent's will pay attention to it, but it will give me some teeth!)

OK then...no fracture. Walking boots are frequently used with minor fractures pending orthopedic appointments but NEVER without non-weight bearing status. Just like JKL33 said above - "malarky!"

I was sure the teacher was being overdramatic with the "multiple broken bones". I didn't consider the family using a boot they had at home.

I had a fractured ankle with a boot. I was NWB and had to use crutches for the first 6 weeks (ugh) then was slowly transitioned to weight bearing. If it comes out that the kid does not have a fracture (and I would require a physician note before apologizing for missing anything) you bet yer bippy I would take myself to that teacher and let her know whats up.

Teacher gave the kid the boot to use in school. Sorry, couldn't resist.

I tell every parent that they should have a recurring complaint checked out. You saw what appeared to be an active child with no outward symptoms of fracture, the parents , however, have far greater interaction. It rests on them. I would confront this teacher with admin, she undermines your professionalism and she has made this personal. Sounds pretty irritating.

I am sooo sick of parents allowing their children to take boots, splints, etc. out of storage and not telling me, I could scream. Have 2 students in casts, and the proliferation of "sympathy injuries" is remarkable. Tomorrow is grandparents/ special friends day. Praying for no CP, broken hips, etc. I know the students won't be coming to see me.

Not to mention that this was done in front of a student

We have grandparents day the last day of school before Thanksgiving. On that day I take the AED out of its case and put it on my counter along with an adult BVM, adult C collar, and adult oral airways. I have gloves in my pocket and say a prayer for no disasters.

I was joking about broken hips, etc. then I realized that most of these grandparents are close to my age.:whistling:

i had one student that needed crutches legitimately the beginning of the school year. A popular student, i suppose - i don't know, i don't keep score on these things. The next thing I know all the girls are in on crutches. Who knew that the hot fall accessory this year was crutches?

Update: Student did have a fracture. I received a fax from the doctor's office today. "Salter Harris type 2 fracture", no restrictions, boot for 3 weeks before following up with ortho."

Since we talked in the fall, she stopped sending kids back multiple times for the same thing. I was thinking about talking to her about the comment, but she actually came to talk to me at the end of the day yesterday to see if I thought the parents were lying to her. I think her actions are just HER, not a personal attack on me.

Teaching my hypochondriac staff members take up more of my time and energy than an occasional rude comment
