Enterovirus D68

Anyone seeing it (or paranoid parents) at your school? There's no confirmed cases in my state yet, but 10 suspected cases in a city not far away, so we're cleaning more, encouraging hand washing like mad, and getting ready to send kids home.

There is a thread on the blue side about EV-D68 and Ebola. Just an FYI.

Ebola in Texas | allnurses

EV-D68 is a late summer/early fall virus that comes every year. So many enteroviruses . . . the one for the common cold and the one for TRUE polio. Runs the gamut.

This is a non-polio enterovirus. There are some cases - I think 4 - where kids have some issues with paralysis symptoms. And the child who died had a staph infection as well and from what I've read, that is what killed her.

It is more dangerous for the kids with lung issues like asthma or adults with COPD. Otherwise, we've all had it at one time or another.

If only we could convince the press.....

I have had some parents that have inquired, however no cases yet! I am figuring this year may be a tough one with entro virus and flu.

I have been reminding children the importance good hand washing every chance I get.

Well today I had a bleeder. Kid got cut with scissors and was bleeding pretty steadily and dripping a bit on the way to my office. (Just how you want to end a Friday with a kid possibly needing stitches). All I heard as we passed the a classroom was "Oh no, now we will all get ebola because of her bleeding on the floor."

The U S Department of

Education Family Policy Compliance Office (FPCO) is receiving inquiries

regarding the applicability of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

(FERPA) in regard to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from

education records to local health officials. Given these inquiries, Dale King,

the Director of the U S Department of Education Family Policy Compliance

Office (FPCO) sent out this reminder of the guidance issued by FPCO in

October 2009 in response to privacy and public safety concerns at that time

regarding the H1N1 flu outbreak. This guidance document is available on our

website at: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/pdf/ferpa-h1n1.pdf

Although, the guidance is specific to H1N1, the context of the guidance is

applicable today in terms of Enterovirus D68, Ebola, etc. Additional questions

may be forwarded to [email protected].

That first link takes me to Outlook Express . . . .?

I had to to talk about FERPA and HIPAA yesterday with the teachers . . . . very frustrating part of my job.

I sent those in a mass email last week.

Basic handwashing hygiene.

Today there is news that one child died from this virus although the story is odd - no symptoms except red eyes which were thought to be conjunctivitis. . . . . . but died in his sleep.

Four-year-old US child dies from enterovirus D68

People may panic but what about the 96 kids who died of influenza last year?

We have a flu shot for that.
